Cocktails & Mocktails

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.
The holidays are quickly approaching, and serving up cocktails to your guests is the perfect way to celebrate the season in a fun and festive way.

Because I’m a newbie when it comes to concocting drinks, I consulted NU grad, Lucas Rose, a cocktail making connoisseur (in his free time) for some suggestions. Luckily, he provided us with his favorite seasonal cocktail recipes, including some of his own. He said his “biggest suggestion for any of these is that whoever is making them should do so to taste. Very often I will learn a drink and then adjust the actual ingredients to suit the person I am making them for.”

Use his recipes as inspiration for coming up with your own drink creations. And remember, if you are under 21 or don’t drink, you can always make (mock)tails without the alcohol!

Spiked Eggnog

  • Shot and a half of vodka (preferably something slightly better quality, the plastic bottle stuff becomes really apparent in this mix)
  • Fill the rest of the glass up with your favorite egg nog
  • Sprinkle some cinnamon in
  • Garnish with a candy cane
  • Suggest your guest stir it occasionally with the candy cane so that the peppermint flavor is spread throughout

Irish Milk Shake

  • Pour in two shots of Baileys
  • Add a shot and a half equivalent of chocolate syrup
  • Fill the rest of the glass with milk
  • Sit until syrup is fully mixed
  • Drink should be a nice dark chocolate color

Jack Frost/Father Christmas/Drunken Elf
  • Roughly 1-1.5 shots of vodka
  • Two shots of Peppermint schnapps
  • Stir together and pour into a martini glass
  • Garnish with a candy cane
  • This one is a little hard to get right, Lucas usually like to give the mixture a quick smell to make sure that the vodka or schnapps is not too strong.

Rudolph Martini
  • Rub the rim of a martini with a lime
  • Coat the rim with red sanding sugar
  • Pour two shots of vodka in a shaker
  • Add the desired amount of cranberry juice
  • Add 1 tsp of vermouth
  • Shake until cold and then pour

Dessert Martini

  • Pour a shot and a half of vodka into a cocktail shaker
  • Pour a half a shot of dark creme de cacao
  • Stir and pour into a martini glass
  • Garnish with a truffle pierced by a cocktail skewer

White Christmas/Fresh Powder
  • Pour one shot of Amaretto into a cocktail shaker
  • Add one shot of vodka
  • Add one shot of heavy cream
  • Shake and pour into a martini glass

Fireside
  • Pour one shot of coffee liqueur into a mug
  • Add equal parts hot coffee and hot chocolate
  • Stir
  • Sprinkle chocolate shavings
  • Add whipped cream
  • Garnish with a chocolate covered cookie (Lucas prefers LU Le Petit Ecolier Milk Chocolate biscuits)
