1. Name: Kate Secrest
2. Year in school: Sophomore
3. Major: Combined Communications and Media and Screen Studies
4. Hometown: Frisco, Texas
5. When did you join Delta Zeta?: Fall of 2015
6. Why did you join Delta Zeta?
Going through recruitment, I remember feeling consistently comfortable in the DZ room. Right from the start I knew that these were people I could be myself around and that these were girls that would be there for me, challenge me, and overall bring out the best in me!
7. What else are you involved in on campus?
I work for the College of Arts, Media, and Design as a Peer Mentor and Teaching Assistant in the intro classes for freshman and transfers! This fall was the first time I was able to do it but it was such a great experience I’m really hoping to doing it again next fall!
8. Have you been on any co-ops? If so, where?
I’m currently on my first co-op at the Boston Globe! I’m working in the digital marketing department doing Advertising Operations.
9. What’s your favorite class you’ve taken at Northeastern?
My favorite class was one I took this past fall called Advertising and Promotional Culture. We studied the history of advertising practices including how old techniques led to modern advertising. I thought this was interesting not only because I’m interested in the industry, but also because it offered a really interesting outlook and taught us how to critically examine ads that we see.
10. What advice would you give to younger girls who are considering coming to Northeastern and joining Greek life?
I would say that the best thing you can do for yourself is to keep an open mind; whether that be about specific chapters or Greek life in general. I am so grateful that I was able to go through recruitment without having any preconceived ideas about the chapters on campus or Greek life as a whole. At the end of the day, recruitment is about finding the chapter that is right for you; that process shouldn’t be affected by anyone else’s opinion but your own!
11. Positions in DZ:
Last year I served on the Philanthropy committee and helped plan our annual spring philanthropy event, Spikes for Tykes! This past fall I was the Homecoming Chair and had the opportunity to meet and work with a lot of great people in other chapters to coordinate activities surrounding Homecoming Week. Now, I’m currently serving as the chapter Secretary!
