Homecoming week has arrived, which brings Northeastern its yearly dose of speeches, sports and school spirit. Voting for your 2012 Homecoming Queen, as well as Homecoming King and Mayor of Huntington Avenue, opened Sunday night, so before you log into myNEU to cast your vote, get to know each of your Queen candidates a little bit better!
Elizabeth Bailey
Year: Junior (Class of 2014)
Hometown: Johnson City, Tennessee
Major: English (Law and Public Policy Minor)
Organization you’re representing: Sigma Delta Tau Sorority
Why you’re running for homecoming queen: I am running because it has been my dream to represent my fellow Huskies ever since I first arrived at Northeastern! I am the Vice President of Social Affairs for Sigma Delta Tau, and the position has given me the chance to make a lot of great connections within the community. I treasure all of the time I’ve spent as a Husky, and I hope you will vote for me!
Best Northeastern memory: My favorite memory would probably be when I had the chance to travel to the Supreme Judicial Court with my peers from the Law and Public Policy program last year. I remember watching the court action and realizing that a career in law was just where I wanted to end up. I have since completed my Law minor, made several more trips to the court to observe different kinds of cases, and even decided to add a minor in Political Science to better equip myself. Finding that sense of purpose and drive to make a difference in the laws and policies of our community truly changed my life.
Fun fact: My family currently lives in Tennessee, but I lived on Kauai, Hawaii until I was 14. I danced hula for various halaus, performed solo in front of my entire school, and still sometimes dream of being a hula instructor. Maybe if Law doesn’t work out!
Liz Breen
Year: Senior (Class of 2013)
Hometown: Holden, Massachusetts
Major: Communications (Business Administration Minor)
Organization you’re representing: Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority
Why you’re running for homecoming queen: Crowns fit my head really well and Breen rhymes with queen, how perfect :)
Best Northeastern memory: Running out of Ell Hall and into my sisters’ arms after being a Rho Gamma and being disaffiliated for eight weeks. An example of what it was like to be disaffiliated: During the first week of school I went to the Colleges Against Cancer Cookout and when I got there I realized there was a sister at the BBQ, so I had to pretend I didn’t know her and sit by myself and eat a cheeseburger on a bench in the quad. It was so traumatic, lonely and I’ve never felt more like Cady Heron!
Fun fact: I’m really good at hula hooping.
Grace Cuneo
Year: Senior (Class of 2013)
Hometown: Haddonfield, New Jersey
Major: Business Administration (Marketing and Management Concentration)
Organization you’re representing: Delta Zeta Sorority
Why you’re running for homecoming queen: Northeastern has given me so much; the opportunity to study abroad, leadership experience as a Resident Assistant, three amazing co-op experiences, and a wonderful community. I want to run for Homecoming Queen to recognize all that Northeastern has done for me and proudly represent Northeastern and my Sorority, Delta Zeta.
Best Northeastern memory: Homecoming Freshman year. Because I had come from a smaller school in New Jersey, I was overwhelmed by the school spirit and Husky pride during my first homecoming.
Fun fact: I don’t have my 12 year old molars – never grew in and probably never will!
Caitlin Dickson
Year: Senior (Class of 2013)
Hometown: North Greenbush, New York
Major: Psychology
Organization you’re representing: Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority
Why you’re running for homecoming queen: As a senior, I feel that it is a great way to celebrate 5 years of being a proud Husky!
Best Northeastern memory: Joining a sorority!
Fun fact: I teach a weekly Scottish dancing class.
Xenia Ferraro
Year: Senior (Class of 2013)
Hometown: Hawthorne, New Jersey
Major: Industrial Engineering
Organization you’re representing: Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority
Why you’re running for homecoming queen: I am so excited to run for homecoming queen mainly because of the others who are on the court with me. Most of the candidates are my friends, and I can’t wait to spend the week with them going to events and spending my last Homecoming at NU representing my sorority. I went to an all-girls high school so we never had a homecoming or prom kings or queens, therefore I want to take full advantage of this opportunity and have the most fun possible.
Best Northeastern memory: Joining DPhiE as a Freshman and participating in the Homecoming 2008 float building and parade! Although we don’t do it anymore, it was an event where I got to know all of my sisters and show tons of school spirit at the last Homecoming football game!
Fun fact: I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do!
Bianca Millien
Year: Middler (Class of 2015)
Hometown: Grayson, Georgia
Major: International Business (Marketing)
Organization you’re representing: Northeastern Black Student Association, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
Why you’re running for homecoming queen: I am running for Homecoming Queen because I believe that my school spirit goes beyond just the athletics. I am proud to represent NU academically and socially as well. I also believe that Homecoming Queen isn’t a title you wear for the week, but one that you continue to wear throughout the school year.
Best Northeastern memory: If I had to pick one it would be the first basketball game of my freshman year. It was so much fun getting together with a group of newly made friends and going crazy at the game!
Fun fact: My favorite color is Gurple, green and purple, because I can’t choose between the two.
Jenny Riddell
Year: Senior (Class of 2013)
Hometown: Riverside, Connecticut
Major: Communications (Production and Business Minors)
Organization you’re representing: Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority
Why you’re running for homecoming queen: I have strived to take advantage of every opportunity that Northeastern has offered me in order to grow as a student and as a person, and being Homecoming Queen would complete my Northeastern experience. I have been on three co-ops, traveled abroad, and joined multiple student groups, but Homecoming Queen would be the ultimate way to represent my pride as a Husky. As much as I am a part of Northeastern, Northeastern is a part of me. Nothing compares to walking through our campus full of brilliant and motivated students, performing on the stage of Blackman with No Limits Dance Crew, or hosting philanthropy events with my sisters of Kappa Kappa Gamma. I have to admit, I don’t know all of the Huskies walking right next to me, but I know we all have something in common. We’re all happy to be home. If I am voted to be this year’s Homecoming Queen, I will be the face and reminder for my fellow Huskies that they are always welcome home.
Best Northeastern memory: It is so difficult to pick one memory from Northeastern that really stands out, but I will pick one from my Freshman year as that was the time I was forming my initial opinions (and love) of Northeastern! I will never forget when the Men’s Hockey team won one of the first games of the season against our rival Boston College. After the game, the streets were packed with Northeastern students cheering and chanting “North! Eastern!”. The school pride was amazing and I will always remember that moment.
Fun fact: I thought I was short, but while on co-op at MTV Networks in New York City, I realized I’m taller than Snooki, Kim Kardashian, and Kourtney Kardashian!
Laura Beth (LB) Solomon
Year: Senior (Class of 2013)
Hometown: Methuen, Massachusetts
Major: Civil Engineering
Organization you’re representing: Kappa Delta Sorority
Why you’re running for homecoming queen: I’m running for Homecoming Queen because I love Northeastern and cherish the amazing memories I’ve made over the past 4 years. As Homecoming Queen, I would represent Northeastern’s high ideals and what being a Husky means. Northeastern has enhanced the person I am and pushed me to become the best student, friend, employee, and Husky I can be.
Best Northeastern memory: My best NU memory has to be when I volunteered at Freshmen Move-In day. I had a mom cry on my shoulder about missing her daughter. We talked for an hour about how great NU was and she told me I was an amazing person and represented Northeastern so well!
Fun fact: I was on the front of the NU Homecoming packet in 2009.
Becca Vanderwall
Year: Junior (Class of 2014)
Hometown: Webster, New York
Major: Biology (Health Science Minor)
Organization you’re representing: Resident Student Association (RSA)
Why you’re running for homecoming queen: I am running for homecoming queen because my love for all you Huskies out there is enormous, and I think that this involvement is the greatest way for me to show it! I want to show off my Husky Pride and encourage all Northeastern students to do so as well – not to mention all the amazing Homecoming events that I get to be a part of as a court candidate! Check out www.facebook.com/votevanderwall for more.
Best Northeastern memory: I’d have to say that my favorite memory was my first NEACURH (North East Affiliates for College and University Residence Halls) leadership conference that I attended at NYU my Freshman year through RSA. I was chosen to be a delegate and to represent Northeastern with student leaders from all over the Northeast! I cheered for our Huskies, dressed up in crazy costumes, and got to show other schools why Northeastern is so amazing. Our delegation even won Most Spirited School at that conference!
Fun fact: I have been paid professionally to be a flash mob dancer for Boston’s Improv Asylum.
