There are certain people that you encounter almost daily around campus, and whether you know them through and through or know next to nothing about them, you sometimes feel as if you know them based solely on their style. Now in my second semester at this school, I’ve been graced with another class with my friend Alexa Rowe—whose style I admired before we even spoke.
Alexa has always had a confidence about her that is only amplified by her style. She carries herself well, and her wardrobe shows it. When I spoke with her earlier about how well she dresses, she beamed, proudly recounting her mother’s advice to her all through life: “She always told me it’s just as easy to put on a cute blouse as it is to throw on a sweatshirt.”
Alexa’s cool winter style is mostly about layers, a few accessories, and at least one pop of color. Her featured outfit was a loose white blouse, grey jeggings and black Vince Camuto boots, with the eye catching, outfit making accessories of a purple scarf, a Guess watch, Ray Ban aviators, and a necklace of combined family charms that she affectionately told me about. A little designer here, a little home made there.
Grey weather doesn’t necessarily dictate bland wardrobe—but any collegiette can tell you that fluorescent colors and an overwhelming palette belong in the warmer months. For winter, ladies, keep it simple—build on your wardrobe one by one, and keep an important combination of splurge designer pieces (because we all deserve it, here and there) and simpler, down to earth pieces (because whose bank account can really withstand that much designer?)
In building such a closet, Alexa dished her own shopping secrets. “I’m bad, I always buy an outfit whenever I have anywhere to go out,” she said, laughing it off. “I’m a dress person, because it’s easier to just grab one thing….but when I buy a dress, I’ll add on and buy something else, too.” Whenever you have something in mind to grab, ladies, grab a little something extra. Grab a cute necklace with those jeans, a new ring with that skirt. The key is to slowly build, so as not to break the bank.
Alexa also expressed a varied taste in shopping. Her simple, button down white blouse was from Gap, and her Guess watch and Ray Bans were bought separately at those given stores. However, her jeggings and scarf were bought at separate boutiques on Newbury St—names she can’t remember, only to attest to her love for boutiques. She likes to check it all out—and you shouldn’t be afraid to leave your comfort zone and look everywhere, as well. You never know what you can find!
All in all, Alexa’s style looks confident, cool, and perfectly thrown together. Everything compliments each other and looks straight out of a magazine ad, without looking like Alexa meticulously picked every detail. With just the addition of a blazer, this outfit could go from campus hit to business professional, and vice versa. An added blazer or cardigan here and a scarf or belt there makes this outfit one of the most versatile ones out there!
