The Worst Things About Going to the Gym in the Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

So you made a New Year’s resolution to work out more. It seemed like a great decision at the time, but now that you’re faced with the double whammy of winter and frequent workouts, your committed attitude is quickly fading away. It might be comforting to know that you’re not the only one with winter-workout-related frustrations. Here’s a list of some of the worst.

It’s so freaking cold.

You can barely handle walking to class, let alone heading to the gym for a workout. Also, walking to the gym requires putting on all of your winter gear, only to peel it all off and stuff it in a locker 10 minutes later. Maybe you can just run laps around your apartment instead?

It’s crowded.

You’re not the only one who thought it was a good idea to work out more this year. Especially in January, the gym gets so busy that you have to wait in line to swipe in, and if you’re there at peak times (8-10 a.m., 12-1 p.m., or 6-8 p.m. on weekdays), forget about using an elliptical. Luckily by February the crowd should start to thin out, but midmorning January workouts are anything but ideal.

It’s exhausting.

The pressure of starting classes or co-op again along with the frigid weather can be trying in itself – add a daily workout to the mix and you’ll barely be able to keep your eyes open past 10 p.m. On the flip side, however, working out could give you a burst of energy that can’t be achieved by staying home in your warm bed.

Static electric shocks are inevitable.

The amount of static that develops on your clothes is one of the least desirable parts of winter, and going to the gym exacerbates the problem. Doors, lockers and water fountains are all potential danger zones. Chances are you’ll get shocked multiple times before your workout is over.

It’s hard on your budget.

Leaving Marino without stopping by Au Bon Pain for hot chocolate or Boloco for a teriyaki burrito is already a challenge – add in the cold weather and that warm pick-me-up is almost impossible to resist. Forget about trekking to the dining hall or cooking a meal at your apartment – it’s another Qdoba night!

Germs are unavoidable.

It’s pretty common knowledge that the gym is a hotbed for bacteria, and the added crowds in the winter only makes this worse. Make sure to wipe down machines after use, and wash your hands before and after you work out.

Even though there are numerous obstacles, going to the gym is still a great stress reliever and a healthy way to kick off 2015, so try not to get discouraged by the cold or the crowds. Instead, think about how great you’ll feel when winter is over and you’re already in shape!
