The time has come to start predicting which upcoming movies will enter the list of the largest moneymaking pictures of the year. Summer is the season when the biggest film studios wait to release their insanely budgeted movies to the public. From comedies, to heartbreaking romances, to CGI heavy action movies, any movie genre can become a hit. Some of the most recent movies to land on the summer blockbuster list are The Hangover, Guardians of the Galaxy and Toy Story 3. Can you predict which of these movies will be this upcoming summer’s historical box office hit?
1. Me Before You
Originally a romantic novel released by Jojo Moyes in 2012, Me Before You depicts the bond formed between a paralyzed man, Sam Claflin, and his caretaker, Emilia Clarke. Considering the trailer itself causes waterworks, it is probably a good idea to buy two packs of tissues along with candy before seeing this movie.
2. Finding Dory
How can a forgetting fish be so unforgettable? It has been almost 13 years since Dory swam onto the movie screens, and thankfully, she will return in just a few months. While the first film focused on Dory helping reunite Nemo and Marlin, this time Dory, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, will go on her own journey to find her family. This is definitely a must-see animated flick of the year.
3. Independence Day: Resurgence
Independence Day: Resurgence, another sequel, seems to be bringing back everything that made the first film so successful, except for one thing: Will Smith. Alien conspiracies and technology have certainly developed since 1996, so the sequel could still be a hit. Maybe Liam Hemsworth can attract a new generation of fans to the franchise.
4. The BFG
More book-to-movie adaptations! The BFG, based on a children’s book by Roald Dahl, tells the story of a kind giant who forms a friendship with a child. While the story was obviously written for a younger demographic, the trailer suggests that the movie is hoping to reach a wider audience. It seems a little too spooky for a children’s story, but hopefully Disney doesn’t disappoint.
5. The Legend of Tarzan
Live-action remakes are very trendy nowadays, and Warner Brothers wants to benefit from these profitable productions with The Legend of Tarzan. Out of all the remakes currently being made, this one seems the most ambitious. From the looks of the trailer, the storyline will completely diverge from the 1999 Disney film teenagers and young adults grew up with. Since Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie are starring in it, the movie will have some great acting.
6. Ghostbusters
Out of all the movies on this list, this film, starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, has been the most negatively received by moviegoers. Viewers were not too happy after the release of the trailer and even questioned why Leslie Jones’ character was not as highly educated compared to her other female leads. Despite this undesirable buzz, the film could still do well considering McCarthy is a blockbuster magnet.
7. Jason Bourne
Remember when Matt Damon temporarily left the Bourne franchise and Jeremy Renner stepped in for The Bourne Legacy in 2012? If no, then that is most likely what Universal Pictures was hoping for, because Damon is back with no mention of the sudden change of the lead character. Matt Damon, action sequences and a successful series are the perfect ingredients for a financial victory.
8. Star Trek Beyond
Although the previous Star Trek movies made a substantial amount of money, there has not been a lot of promotion for Star Trek Beyond compared to the other films on this list. Chris Pine is returning but this time with scene stealer Idris Elba. Maybe the studio is waiting until Pine stops working on Wonder Woman, but they definitely need to better advertise this film.
9. Suicide Squad
So many action movies! DC Comics’ Suicide Squad has almost every celebrity possibly for its budget. Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, and Will Smith are just a few of the A-listers sharing the screen. With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice not being well liked by critics, DC wants to redeem its movie making abilities with this film.
10. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
As Kevin Hart is to buddy-cop comedies, Zac Efron is to comedies that feature him playing a ladies’ man. This film looks a little like Wedding Crashers, so it could be a successful film for Efron, Adam Devine and Anna Kendrick. Plus, Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza sound like the comedy dream team.
