Whether you’re single and ready to mingle, or committed beyond belief, Valentine’s Day can be a chance to celebrate the magic of love. I may be in the minority in my appreciation of this arguably commercial holiday, but I don’t let capitalism get in the way of my hopeless romantic roots. Here are some songs that you can jam out to in the week leading up to the big day, whether you’ll be celebrating with your partner, your friends or just a tub of ice cream and Netflix.
1. Perfect Duet by Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé
I was a fan of this track before Ed Sheeran remixed it, but now I can’t stop listening, even though it was released months ago. There is something so enchanting about the combination of Sheeran and Beyoncé’s voices that makes you want them to collab on every song.
2. Mess Is Mine by Vance Joy
Most probably only know Vance Joy for his hit “Riptide,” but all of his songs have the same soothing and sweet quality that made that song so popular. There is nothing more heartfelt, in my opinion, than the sentiment that “Mess Is Mine” expresses.
3. Super Bass by Nicki Minaj
Maybe “Super Bass” isn’t a slow and calming ballad like the previous two suggestions, but that doesn’t make it any less deserving of recognition on Valentine’s Day. This jam is a throwback that never goes out of style, and if you say you’ve never tried rapping Minaj’s verses, you’re lying.
4. Love Yourself by Justin Bieber
I was going to list “Baby” by Justin Bieber, but I decided to switch it up and add a song with a bitter twist. Sometimes Valentine’s Day isn’t all candy hearts and roses – there might be some bad feelings involved, especially if you are going through a break-up. If that’s the case for you, this is the best song to rock out to.Â
5. I’ve Just Seen A Face by The Beatles
This is definitely one of The Beatles’ lesser-known songs, but it has always been my favorite. I don’t believe in love at first sight, but the lyrics to this track make me think that the next person I make eye contact with will be my soulmate.
6. Ashley by Big Sean ft. MiguelÂ
For some reason, when I listen to this song, I always get so emotional. There is something about the flow of the verses and the ease of the chorus that breaks my heart in all the right ways. Shoutout to you, Big Sean.
