Austin Young ’12

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Major: Economics/International Studies with IMC Certificate
Birthday: November 15
Relationship Status: Single
Home state: Florida

After winning the election for ASG President, a much-publicized selection on campus, as we all know, Austin sits down to talk to me in between classes and job interviews to share more about himself, beyond just ASG.

Likes: the beach, boating, polo (the sport) travelling, skiing, driving for fun (well, before gas became $4 a gallon), music, going to concerts

Dislikes: gossip, onions, paying for gas, cloudy days, and gossip again

So what’s it like to be President of ASG so far?
I get sworn in tonight, so I’m technically president elect, but it’s been great meeting people and connecting across Northwestern’s campus.  I want to make it a dynamic and exciting organization people love to talk about and love to be in, because at the end of the day it’s a student group that’s serving Northwestern.

How has it been for you being so well known on campus? Did you feel like a real celebrity?
I didn’t feel like it was that big of a deal during the campaign, but then I noticed people glancing at me a lot more…I don’t consider myself famous at all, so I don’t really know why they’re looking at me!  At Girl Talk, when I glanced into the crowd I saw people were video recording me…twice.  My reaction was, “I’m not a celebrity what are you doing?!” However, I’m flattered that people are excited about ASG, because that’s what I take it as, and that’s the most important thing.

What else are you involved with on campus, besides ASG that is?
I’m a campus tour guide, which I think is a really fun job, and I’m also the co-chair for promotions for Mayfest, and on the promotions committee for A&O, so I helped to promote Girl Talk.

Now to the fun stuff…what’s your idea of a perfect date?
The top priority for me would be making it something she would want to do, which sounds corny, but I like for the date to align with her interests. Specifically, I hope it would involve being on a boat or going to the beach. Something active someplace warm would be ideal.  I’d rather go to a nice restaurant and then take a walk, or stay in and cook for her than do something like going to a movie where you don’t have the chance to talk.

How would you describe your sense of style?
Preppy is the first thing that comes to mind. I’m originally from the south so I’ve grown up with that prepster lifestyle, but I don’t want to be a cookie cutter J Crew model either, so I’m trying to add some Floridian style.  If I can wear flip-flops and shorts and an oxford everyday I’d be set.  But now that I’m in Chicago I wear boat shoes everyday. Overall, I like the preppy look, but I want to make it a little more exciting than just picking clothes out of Vineyard Vines.

Why HC loves Austin:
He’s super friendly and cute and willing to share anything about himself.  He’s also really driven and this comes off immediately while talking to him.  Good job at choosing such a sweet and approachable ASG President Northwestern!
