Copenhannah: Music In Denmark

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Jason Aldean who? Toby Keith huh? For a country music fan, Copenhagen is not the place to be.  Here in Copenhagen, the music is a little different…much more House than Hoedown.

Here is a little taste of what you might hear in a Danish club (fist pumping necessary):

This is Medina. Denmark’s “it girl” at the moment. Her song “Kun for Mig” has been in my head since the first day of Danish class when our teacher showed us the music video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHuWj6ycquQ

Meet Nik and Jay. I think this picture pretty much speaks for itself: two white boys attempting to be thugz.  Nik and Jay have been around for ten years, so now they are 30-year-old white boy thugz. Nik and Jay have a similar following that N’Sync had in the US…screaming teenage girls. “Boing, Boing” is a must-see Nik and Jay video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GIgZso_kn8&feature=relmfu

Sys Bjerre is an edgier pop version of Taylor Swift but in the sense of storytelling part, definitely not the country part . Her first hit song “Malene,” is about when she burned down her boyfriend’s apartment after he cheated on her.  “Picture to Burn” anybody? (I think T-Swift is a little less violent) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjNvC_wu0cg

Denmark’s current hunk: Rasmus Seebach. He is the son of famous singer, Tommy Seebach, who was popular in the 70’s and 80’s. He currently has the number one song in Denmark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yux0E1UrJ0ES

And finally, who could forget AQUA?

AQUA is/was Denmark’s most successful band of all time, selling 33 million albums. Sadly AQUA split up in 2001, but you can still hear Barbie Girl at least twice a night at any club and people go crazy when it’s on (including me). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyhrYis509A&ob=av2e

Start fist pumping like a Dane!

Hej Hej,
