Whether your Valentine’s Day plans involve a hot date, a night with the girls, or a day to treat yourself, chances are as the night winds down, you’ll be looking for a movie to watch. While Nicholas Sparks movies are often pegged as super romantic, some of them can be borderline depressing. We’ve compiled the ultimate guide to help you choose wisely this V-Day, whether you’re cuddling with a cute guy or a bowl of popcorn (we won’t judge!)
If you’re watching with your long-term bf…
“The Notebook” is undoubtedly the most famous of the bunch and enough of a classic that your guy probably feels the need to see it, if only to understand why it’s the brunt of so many jokes. Plus, you’ve probably seen it enough times to minimize the waterworks. The whole undying love theme can’t hurt either.
If you’re watching with a new beau…
Keep things lighter this Valentine’s Day with “Safe Haven.” Half love story, half action flick, it’s guaranteed to please. With a more casual romantic plot line and a happy ending, it will put less pressure on a new relationship.
If you’re watching with your friends….
Check out “The Lucky One,” if only to gaggle over the gratuitous scenes of a shirtless Zac Efron, who gained 18 pounds of muscle for the movie. With a stunning cast, an improbable romance, and a last-minute plot twist, it has everything we love in a Nicholas Sparks movie, just without all the tears.
If you’re watching alone…
Take this golden opportunity to watch “The Last Song,” the movie that began the IRL romance between Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. While the acting isn’t top-notch, you’ll enjoy revisiting vintage Miley, complete with long brown hair and actual clothing! Then cheer yourself up with this video.
Avoid at all costs…
“The Best of Me.” This heart-wrenching movie had us crying for two straight hours, even after reading the book! With an amazing cast (looking at you, James Marsden) and an unpredictable plot, it’s definitely a must-see—just not for Valentine’s Day. If you’re looking for a Marsden fix, check out 27 Dresses instead and save yourself the tissues!
