Hair Extensions: The Do’s And Don’ts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

It’s a classic problem, “My hair is too short,” “My hair is too thin,” and “ I can’t do anything with my hair.” Not to mention every girl dreams of being able to rock those long Kardashian waves.  The answer to hair struggles is actually simpler than one might think; just snap in some more hair when you want it and take it out when you don’t.  One major misconception most women have is that celebs on magazine covers or on TV naturally have the most amazing long, flowing hair in the world. This is absolutely FALSE. These stars have just mastered one of Hollywood’s favorite magic tricks, the hair extension.

DO: Go for the Easy-to Use Clip-in
Hair extensions can be professionally attached in hair salon. However, for a college girl’s budget, the best way to achieve long locks is clip-in extensions.  They are easy to use, last longer and you can take them out whenever you want.  The most challenging part of the clip-in extension is finding the right one for you.

DON’T: Hastily Pick an Extension

Quality is a must, otherwise the extension will get ratty and last only for a few weeks. Brands to trust include Jessica Simpson’s HairDo line and the easihair brand.  The other main factor in selecting an extension is finding just the right color.  When selecting a color, try to get it as close to your own hair color as possible and if you have highlights make sure to also select a multi-toned extension. The best option is to go to a beauty supply store and match it yourself, however there are also smart ways to buy online. DON’T blindly buy off a website without examining their return policy.  If you have to select a color by only looking online, do buy from a website that allows free returns and exchanges so you can send it back hassle free if it does not match.

DO: Put the Extension in Properly
Once you have your perfectly matched extension, putting your extension in is a piece of cake. First, separate your actual hair into two different sections. You will fasten the extension in between these two layers so your actual hair more naturally blends with the piece.  Try to fasten the clips close enough to the root of your real hair so they do not slide out.  Double check to make sure every clip is fastened.

Take your time when clipping in the extension, make sure all the tiny clips are fastened into your hair. Nothing ruins a night out like your extension falling out on the dance floor.  Finally take you pinned up hair down and run your fingers through the hair and extensions to blend them.

DON’T think extensions have only one use.
They can also be used to make hair appear thicker, make a braid wider, or give an up-do a fuller look. If your hair is naturally thin, you can purchase an extension the same length as your hair to give your hair volume and make it appear thicker.  Extensions are a fun way to change up your look and try something new without any real commitment.
