Keeping Up (and Kosher) with (Dr.) Gabby Ahlzadeh

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Year: Graduating Junior

Majors: Religion and HPME  (so she’s starting at NU Med School next fall!)

I heard you are involved in a whole bunch of things around campus?
I’m a second-year CA. I do Camp Kesemand I’m on Hillel’s Social Team and community service Task Force. I am a tour guide and I work with Admissions. I’m on Women’s Club Rugby team. I’m on Chabad executive board also. I was in SASA Show last year but I’m really sad I won’t be in it this year.

Whoa. You do a lot. It’s probably not fair to ask but, what’s your favorite?
I love rugby because it’s club sport and it has a unique culture. I do DM too and a whole bunch of philanthropy things. So much of my life I’ve been given amazing opportunities and I’m going to be a doctor so my life will always be about giving back to people. It’s just a big part of who I am.I hate when people are like, you just have a laundry list of activities. Clearly, I don’t need to beef up my resume – I really do like doing all of these things. Obviously, I like some more than others, but I choose to do them. No one is making me.

So, with HPME, you’re sort of a senior now and you’re moving downtown next year? You’re a real person.
Yea, I’m supposed to be doing that. My mom is thinking about buying an apartment downtown and I’ve been looking with roommates. I’m far from a real person. I eat all my meals in dining halls.Figuring out utilities and finding buildings with gyms and such is not easy. But, I’m trying to be a real person.

What’s your favorite dining hall?
I like Allison because I always have that connection to freshman year when I lived there and the kosher guys love me!  I eat vegetarian everywhere else. I like pineapple. When they have it in Sargeant it makes my day.

Oh, you keep kosher! Me too! Tell me more fun facts about yourself.
I speak English, Hebrew, and SpanishI know curse words in Farsi. I’m from Atlanta originally but now, LA. I speak like a CalforniaGurl. I’m all Multi-Culty.

Awesome. I heard you’re also in Religion stuff?
I take random classes. I’m not even taking any science classes right now.  I’m taking two religion classes right now, a politics class, andMorty’s class. I would recommend his class for next year. Right now, they don’t really know what they’re doing and they kind of just argue with each other. When they work it out next year, it’s going to be really great.  During the quarter, we get to go to Morty’s house for dinner. He has four nights that you pick from. And he keeps kosher, too!

How do you keep your residents in line? What’s been the most memorable CA moment?
You’re that cool older person but I think they realize that when push comes to shove, I’m the authority figure. It’s a fine line and it’s hard to juggle the roles. It’s hard not to be friends with them. But if they do something wrong, they don’t want to disappoint me. It’s just funny being surrounded by freshman. One morning I woke up and my residents duct taped a shopping cart to my door and I couldn’t open my door. I could open it enough to stick scissors out and cut the duct tape.

As a CA, you work with a lot of freshmen. How do you encourage other people to join activities and find communities at NU?
I think it’s really important to get involved freshmen year. I’ve experienced so much of Northwestern through my activities and there are so many cool things to get involved with that fit all types of people. With my freshmen, I try to find out what they’re interested in and set them up with my friends who are involved in things that they would like.

Monica is a sophomore at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She spent her early years growing up in a small town in Minnesota, but spent the last half of her life in Seoul, South Korea where she developed a city girl love for good food finds and fashion. Journalism has been a major part of her life, but she can also be found relaxing with a cup of coffee, watching movies, and spending time with loved ones. Though she has a tough exterior, Monica is actually a romantic who loves the power of words, the importance of strength in any endeavor, and who always wears her heart on her sleeve.
