Meet Marc Chicoine: Fusion Dance Star

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Major: Communication Studies

When and how did you start dancing?
I started dancing when I was around 9 years old after seeing a hip-hop dance show that my family took me too. From then on I was hooked, and I started learning Hip-Hop at a local dance center. Out of luck a member of the Jabbawockeez Crew, from the America’s Best Dance Crew T.V. show, taught at the studio, and he really paved the way for hip-hop dance in my community. His student also took me under his wing and taught me hip-hop foundation, breaking, and really instilled a passion for the dance that still holds true today.

How would you describe your dance style?
My style is primarily hip-hop and breaking. Breakdancing or (B-Boying) is the style I most relate with, however I love choreography hip-hop, freestyle, house dancing, and isolations and popping as well.

What dancer(s) inspire you?
I’m very inspired by Roxrite, a breakdance world champion from my home area, because he really embodies the cultural aspect of hip-hop dance. I also love the Jabbawockeez Crew and Academy of Villains crew for their creativity and ingenuity.

What’s your favorite part about dancing and Fusion?
I’m blessed to dance with Fusion because it offers a unique perspective on the different styles of dance that each person specializes in, as well as of the culture of Northwestern itself. Each crew member comes from a different background, is talented, is involved in many different hobbies, and lives very differently. Dance is an underlying passion we all have, which brings us all together.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years I could see myself in the media management side of the international hip-hop and breakdance industry or of the music industry. I also would like to travel and just immerse myself in communities I enjoy being involved with. As long as I’m enjoying where I’m at, I really don’t mind where I end up.
