HC: How long have you been involved with Treblemakers?
BA: I auditioned for the Treblemakers during fall my Freshman year and have been with them ever since. Itās been awesome getting to see the group grow over this past year and a half and help get us to Asia!
Ā
HC: Do you have a special position in the group?
BA Thereās about seven of us that make up Treblesā exec, and Iām the secretary! I print out our sheet music, take meeting minutes, keep attendance, among other smaller things.
Ā
HC: What do you typically sing? (song type and voice part)
BA Iām a Tenor. Trebles sings songs in a slew of languages (Chinese, Korean, Japanese), but most of the songs I sing with Trebles are in English.
Ā
HC: The info for The Layover seem to suggest that there will be more than just singing. Will there be skits? What is the plot?
BA The skits are essentially a parody of The Hangover (thatās still culturally relevant right??). Basically, the plot is that weāre about to leave for Asia (which we will actually do in about a month), but we all mysteriously blackout when we arrive at the airport. When we wake up 12 hours later, we realize that our flight has been delayed, but our passports and a crucial member of a group is missing!
Ā
HC: Do you know how many songs you will be singing?
BA Weāll be singing 9 songs total, with half of them (5) in English and half (4) in Chinese and Korean.
Ā
HC: What are your favorite parts of this show?
BA Weāll be singing a song called No Light, No Light originally by Florence + the Machine. My friend SueSan is singing the solo and she killsĀ it, and the feel the ensemble gets is incomparable!
Ā
HC: What else are you involved in at Northwestern?
BA Iām the Publicity Chair of Northwestern College Feminists and occasionally act in Stuco shows on campus. Iām also involved with Delta Lab, a research group on campus interested in social computing.
Ā
HC: What is the most fun/coolest thing you have done as a Treblemaker?
BA Prepare for our Asia Tour! This upcoming Spring Break, we will be embarking on a 10-day tour of Asia, where weāll perform in Beijing, Seoul, and Hong Kong. Iām really excited, as weāve been planning this for a year now and itās crazy to think that itās actually going to happen so soon!
Ā
HC: How would you describe the Treblemakers group as a whole?
BA Cheesy as it may sound, Trebles really is like a family to me. Itās a strange dynamic because thereās the āprofessionalā singing aspect of the group and then the actual friendships that get bonded both inside and outside of rehearsal, so some things conflict sometimes. But overall, Trebles is a really great support group that shares so much love.
HC: How are you guys different from other a cappella groups on campus?
BA Weāre the only East-Asian interest a cappella group on campus, and we strive to celebrate and showcase Asian performing excellence. In terms of our sound, though, I say we sound pretty smooth!
Ā
HC: The ads on the event page are so funny! And the posters are so good! Who did those?
BA Jason Yuan, our publicity chair, is the guy behind all of the graphics and posts! Heās really amazing at graphic design in addition to his singing skills.
Ā
HC: If you could be one singer for a day who would it be and why?
BA Janelle Monae, no question. She has so much talent and passion both in terms of social justice and in musical prowess that I really admire.
Ā
HC: If you had to be stuck in an elevator for 5 hours with one song playing the whole time what song? Why?
BA Alan Li, a Freshman in Trebles, has this really great solo called Na Xie Nian that he kills every time. Iād listen to that for more than 5 hours straight to be honest.
Ā
HC: Anything else youād like to add?
BA Come watch The Layover this Friday and Saturday at Harris!
Ā
The Layover will be held in Harris Hall 107 on Friday at 8 PM and 11PM and Saturday at 11PM.
