On Friday night Northwestern students piled into the Jones Great Room for Purple Haze’s 16th annual winter show, “Too Much A Cappella Makes the Baby Go Deaf!” And with a packed audience, fast-paced skits, and of course amazing music, the show was definitely a hit.
The a cappella group had performances at 7, 9, and 11 p.m. Griffin’s Tale served as a fun opening act before each show. The last performance was especially wild, with hosts KC Schlossberg and Matt Deitchman doing a great job of keeping a group of rowdy fraternity gentlemen under control. Using the code word “Ishan,” the crowd yelled out what number they wanted to see and then Purple Haze delivered with either a song or skit.
The group, dressed in crazy costumes, performed a set list that did not disappoint. Hits like Jessie J’s “Domino” and Jack’s Mannequin’s “Dark Blue” kept the audience wanting more. The last song, Demi Lovato’s “Get Back,” truly brought the house down.
Purple Haze gave the audience what they wanted, and at all three shows the crowd was dying for a little Carly Rae Jepsen. In the game “Don’t Make Me Sing,” the audience got to decide a song for Purple Haze to arrange on the spot. And you can bet the crowd chose “Call Me Maybe,” the ridiculously catchy song sweeping through campus.
Freshman Kylie Mullins owned the tune with an on the spot rendition the crowd loved.
“The show went really well and it was so fun,” said Mullins, one of only two freshmen on Purple Haze. “I got to sing ‘Call Me Maybe’ because I’ve been singing it at literally every rehearsal. I think I was the only one who knew all the words.”
The skits joked about everything from Northwestern Memes to Chet Haze. The show offered a much-needed break for students stressed about fast approaching finals.
“I had been writing papers all day,” said sophomore Rachel Libowitz. “ I had an awesome time at the show though. The songs were great, and I honestly didn’t want it to end.”
