I started the TV series The End of the F***ing World in a whirlwind when I randomly clicked the cover photo on Netflix because it looked “artsy.”  Don’t be deterred by the somewhat rash title, and spoiler alert: It is not actually about the world ending. This show is definitely worth watching.

Each episode is about 20 minutes long and it gives a snapshot into the twisted relationship of two non-traditional high school students, James and Alyssa. Together they go on a crazy adventure involving murder, a police chase and love. The two teens open up to each other about their troubling family lives and find a close sense of security in each another. Alyssa and James teach us that relationships can change you for the better and that sometimes you must sacrifice yourself for love.

I started the show knowing nothing about it, but was immediately wrapped up in the drama and the fate of these two teens. I watched all eight episodes in one day – just to give you a sense of how obsessed I was. Not only was the plot line extremely intriguing, but each episode offered a new insight into the story and the characters. As James and Alyssa’s relationship grew, so did my understanding of the characters. These bizarre and angsty teens seem peculiar at first, but I grew to love their quirks, and so will you.

This TV show is great for anyone who loves independent films – like Moonrise Kingdom, Captain Fantastic, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. After seeing this series, I am on a quest for more independent and less mainstream TV shows. The End of the F***ing World will make you think about the inner workings of our minds, and what you would do for love.
