Spring break is coming up and while, for some, that may mean trips to the tropics or other getaways, for many students it is a chance to go home and take a ten day breather from the stress of being at school. If you’re just hanging out in your town and catching up with friends and family, here are some activities that will help you pass the time without breaking the bank or stressing you out.
Top Pick? Picnic
If the weather is sunnier where you’re from, pack up your basket and blanket and enjoy the outdoors in a local park. Purchasing snacks and lunch from a grocery store is super easy, or if you’re adventurous in the kitchen, DIY some treats for yourself and your friends. Don’t forget some lemonade! If you are staying on campus for the break, an indoor picnic is an easy alternative, because I get it, no one wants to be freezing on the Lakefill.Â
The P’s—Painting & Pottery
A studio like Color Me Mine is the perfect outing for some relaxation and creativity. Just pick out a piece and paint away your winter blues! If you’re over 21, look around your town for a place that does painting with wine for a fun girls’ night out! If you want to get on this bandwagon before spring break, Bottle & Bottega in Evanston is a short Uber away serving you yummy wine and some nice acrylics.Â
Get Thrifty
Thrift shopping has really been trending lately as people have gotten more into vintage looks and making sustainable shopping choices. A quick trip to your local Goodwill or boutique thrift shop could help you and your friends score some treasures! Stay on the look out for spring trends like cute hair scarves, maxi skirts, or some worn-in Levi’s.Â
Local Shows
Lots of coffee shops or other small venues will host music or comedy shows in the evenings. It might not be award-worthy, but you could be surprised at how much your town has to offer. Support local businesses and artists by checking out nearby entertainment! Some of my Evanston favorites, if you happen to be in town, are SPACE to see some super underrated musicians, Second City – an iconic Chicagoan show, and Five and Dime for some fun drinks and classic bar games.Â
Hiking
Again, this probably works best if you live in a warmer climate, but a hike in the hills (or on the flats) is always a great way to unplug and enjoy nature. If you’re staying around Evanston don’t forget that Baháʼà is a short walk away! Put on some SPF, grab your water bottle, and you’re all set! Bonus points for packing a picnic and enjoying it after you’re done!Â
