One of the most exciting things about going abroad either on vacation or for a semester of classes is the preparation and planning beforehand. It may only be February, but before you know it, summer will be here and September will follow. Next thing you know, you’ll be in a plane wondering where the time went!
So as you begin planning all the details of your trip abroad, you should budget for a few key items that will be lifesavers down the road. Plan your summer accordingly so you can save up enough money. Instead of going to every concert this summer, put some money aside for your incredible adventure across the pond.Â
Here are a couple items that I think are critical to have while spending a prolonged time in another country:
1. Â A Decently-Sized Bag
Carrying around a backpack all the time can be convenient, and sometimes it’s necessary, but if you are just out touring the city it’s best to leave it at home. In Europe especially, wearing a backpack marks you as an American pretty clearly. Most people in Europe don’t wear them, so you should do everything you can to avoid pickpockets or people that will slash the bottom of your backpack so everything in it falls out.
Invest in a cute tote bag now that will fit everything you need to travel while fitting in with the Europeans. The bag pictured above is the Dooney & Burke Nylon Shopper from Nordstrom.com for $139.00. Although it is pricey, it’s best to invest in a durable bag since you’ll probably be carrying it around with you every day!
The second bag priced at $24.90, from Forever 21, is a lot more budget-friendly. Â Save the extra cash, and put it towards a weekend trip!
2. Â Power Adapters
These aren’t nearly as expensive as a new leather tote bag, but that doesn’t mean they are any less important! The plugs in Europe (and basically everywhere else) are different than American ones, so you’ll need to buy an adapter to charge your laptop and phone. If you want to bring a flat iron or curler, then you’ll probably need to buy a voltage converter as well. These can be more difficult to find, so plan ahead!Â
3. Â A Cute Rain Jacket
Fortunately for us going abroad next spring semester, the wintertime in Europe is mild compared to South Bend, Indiana. Temperatures may occasionally get into the 30’s, but most of the time it will be in the 40’s and low 50’s. Practically summer compared to Notre Dame! However, the lack of snow and ice is made up for in rain. This is another key item that may be pricey, but it will definitely pay off when you’re visiting Rome during the rainy season in the winter! You’ll be outside – either walking to class or visiting new cities – practically every day, so take the time to find a water-proof jacket that you love. The jacket pictured above is the J. Crew Long Field Jacket at $198.00. Check it out here.
Similar to the first jacket, the second jacket, from Forever 21, is only $27.90.
