Amy Schumer: More Than a Comedian

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Actor, writer, and comic Amy Schumer has recently worked her way up in the world of comedy within these past couple of years. Opening her MTV Movie Awards monologue with the words, “Half of you don’t know who I am and half of you think I’m Meghan Trainor,” Schumer did an excellent job of introducing herself to the biggest stage she’d faced in her career thus far. Known for her raunchy and hilarious humor, she explores relationships, sex, and life in her stand-up, Inside Amy Schumer skits, acting, and television interviews. Below are five reasons why everyone should love the incredible Amy Schumer.

1.  She Discusses Feminism in a Satirical Way

After Winning Glamour Magazine’s “Woman of the Year,” Award, Schumer delivered a hilarious yet extremely real speech about the pressures women in comedy face to be sexualized and look perfect. Schumer also manages to unearth deeply pushed away feministic topics in her skits and standup acts like social objectification, unattainable media standards, and even rape.

2.  Inside Amy Schumer is Hilarious and Informative

Feminism has always been a topic that is somewhat difficult to discuss. However, whether taking the liberty of joking about the impossible standards women have in her hilarious sketch “A Chick Who Can Hang” or commenting on the serious issue of rape in the military in “A Very Realistic Military Game,” Schumer always manages to get laughs while raising awareness. Some other sketches include, “Lunch at O’Nutters,” which takes place in a hypothetical male Hooters, and “Operation Enduring Mouth,” a spy-plot where Amy shows that women are degraded to sexual roles in Hollywood films.

3.  Trainwreck Is the Greatest Movie of All Time

This movie never failed to make me laugh throughout the entirety of the film,  and it also gave me that feel-good-warm-fuzzy feeling that is only attainable in certain movies. Not only did Schumer star in it but she also wrote the entire thing herself!

4.  She’s Not Afraid to Get Political

After a tragic shooting in the Grand Theater in Lafayette, LA during a showing of her movie Trainwreck, Schumer took a stand on gun control by teaming up with her cousin Senator Chuck Schumer. Proposing that states issue background checks before allowing people to purchase guns, her and her cousin are working to make positive change in America.

5.  She’s Confident in Her Body and Her Comedy

While undoubtedly raunchy, Schumer has never had a flicker of shame when it comes to her comedy.

In an excerpt from another speech of hers on confidence at the Gloria Awards and Gala, Schumer stated, “I make the funniest people in the country laugh, and they are my friends. I am a great friend and an even better sister. I have fought my way through harsh criticism and death threats for speaking my mind. I am alive, like the strong women in this room before me. I am a hot-blooded fighter and I am fearless.” Her ability to be proud of her body teaches women that it’s okay to defy the stereotype of being the perfectly stick thin girl, and that there’s nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to the female body.

Hi guys! I'm a freshman at ND hoping to study English and Journalism. I'm from Menlo Park, California, and my top three miscellaneous favorite things are without a doubt Nutella-filled crepes, Jcrew, and the entirety of the Wicked sound track. Oh and if the Bachelorette aired every night I would cut out a nightly hour and half to watch it – easily. Go Irish!
