Everyone has a go-to movie (or two, or three) for rainy days and nights in—I can watch every film on this list again and again and again. This compilation of movies has something for every taste and every mood, so the next time you’re trapped inside by April showers, look no further!
Animated
Ratatouille (2007)
Brad Bird, Jan Pinkava
If you like food, and France, and you haven’t seen this movie, you’ve been living half a life for the last eight years. Talking animal quota= filled.
Cult Favorite
The Princess Bride (1987)
Director: Rob Reiner
This modest box office success grew into a smash success once it hit VCR, and now it would be “inconceivable” not to include this film on any list of favorites.
Romance
Love Actually (2003)
Director: Richard Curtis
It doesn’t have to be Christmastime for you to enjoy this star-studded, heartwarming masterpiece. (The style is kind of a precursor to films like Valentine’s Day.)
Chick Flick
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Director: Gil Junger
Late 90’s retelling of The Taming of the Shrew set in a Seattle high school—12 years before Bridesmaids, female screenwriting team Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith dreamed up one of the funniest (and cutest) movies of all time. Shakespeare references? Check. Baby Joseph Gordon Levitt? Double check.
Action
Batman: The Dark Knight (2008)
Director: Christopher Nolan
I have something of a Heath Ledger fetish, but even putting that aside, this is probably my favorite movie of all time.
Drama/Thriller
Road to Perdition (2002)
Director: Sam Mendes
1930’s Chicago gangster film—Credit goes to my senior year cinema teacher for introducing me to this one. If you’re looking for a dark, yet beautiful movie, this is as good as it gets. Plus, one seldom goes wrong with Tom Hanks.
Horror
Identity (2003)
Director: James Mangold
I’m no horror movie connoisseur, but if I was to watch this one again, I would watch it in a group, and I would enlist a big, strong friend to walk me back to my dorm afterwards.
Comedy
Dodgeball (2004)
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
An absolute classic that simply never gets old.
Musical
Hairspray (2007)
Director: Adam Shankman
Words cannot express how much I wanted to be in this movie—the hair…the clothes…the dancing…Zac Efron…
Foreign
Run, Lola, Run (1998)
Director: Tom Tykwer
For when you’re having your super artsy friend over and you want to discuss themes like color as characterization and time and all that.
Sci Fi
Super 8 (2011)
Director: JJ Abrams
A delightful, yet underrated film. While shooting a homemade movie, a group of kids accidentally capture some extraterrestrial activity on camera.
Oldie
Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
Director: Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly
Combine some good-natured Old Hollywood satire with lively tap sequences and unforgettable songs and you get this timeless classic.
Happy watching!
