Meet a cutie with a cause! Even though he only made it to the third hat ceremony on the Irish Bachelorette, sophomore Agustin Garcia is passionate about helping others and dedicated to making the world a better place through fair financing and opportunity. It was a pleasure to discuss his involvement on campus and goals in life! Â
Year: 2016
Dorm: Morrissey
Major? Finance
What’s the major you wish you chose? Finance…
Hometown: Monterray, Mexico
What are you involved in on campus? JIFFI – Jubilee Initiative for Financial Inclusion – It’s a student run organization aiming to eradicate predatory lending. I’m also involved in Sophomore Class Council and Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars.  Â
Relationship status: Single
What does it mean to be a domer? A domer is someone who strives to excel and create positive change in everything he does.
What is your best ND memory so far? The football game against Pittsburgh last year, with three overtimes; we were about to lose and they [Pitt] missed a thirty yard field goal or something. It was pretty exciting.
What is the #1 item on your ND bucket list? Start “something” that will leave a legacy behind for years to come.
What are the best and worst things about ND? The best things are the community, campus, spirit, and all of the opportunities. The weather, weather, and weather… Snow, rain, and wind.
If you could change one thing about Notre Dame, what would it be? I would change the policy in the dining halls to make it a more fair dining hall system, and better menus.
What’s the best class you’ve taken at ND? History of Modern Mexico with Professor Jaime Pensado, co-taught by Cuauhtema Cardenas, founder of PRD (the left party in Mexico).
What’s your favorite spot on campus? Main Building
What did you think you were going to do when you came in as a freshman? I thought I was going to be an investment banker.
Favorite Domer – dead, alive, or fictional? Does Fr. Ted count? [Absolutely!]
What do you wish ND girls knew? The one thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of guys here don’t have good manners – I wish Notre Dame girls and American girls in general knew that they have the power. It’s up to them to have self-respect in such a way that guys are forced into having manners and treating them with respect. They can force men into being gentlemen. And me…Â
What do you wish you knew about ND girls? Would they marry me?
If you could go back to freshman year and tell yourself one thing you know now, what would it be? Less Skype, more Notre Dame.
Ideal academic and professional endgame? My academic goal is to prepare myself in the best way possible to be a transformational leader in whatever activity I choose to pursue. Professionally, to enact that leadership and actually do something to make the world a better, more fair place.
In 25 years you will be… Mexican president.
Tell me something no one here knows about you. That I actually have a heart. (But I hope some people know that already…)
Guilty pleasure band? One Direction.
Why did you initially audition for the Irish Bachelorette? I was voted as Tribute from the [Hesburgh-Yusko] Scholarship to support Caitlin Crommett.
What was your reaction to meeting Kirsten for the first time? It was awkward, because I was late. “Poor girl, this is gonna be so awkward.”
Did you know any of the other guys? I knew Mike [Blume], I knew Brian [Bertsche].
How did you feel about the dynamic of the group? It was really different off-camera. No one really hated me off-camera. So it was fun. We had a good time. We all agreed it was an awkward experience but we wanted to make the best of it.
What were your feelings on the one-on-one time you spent with Kirsten? “This camera is really annoying.”
How did you feel about getting cut from the show? I was relived. It was my fault.
What do you think led to your being cut? Being late…
Who were you rooting for to win once you left the show? I guess I was just rooting for the show to be a success.Â
If given another shot, what would you do differently? I would have been more sarcastic for the whole thing. Because after seeing some of the other guys’ performance in the first show, that was so hilarious. I wish I would have done that.
Was it what you expected? I wasn’t expecting anything…
What do you anticipate for your love life going forward? I hope that I’m the right man for someone. This [experience] probably will hurt my chances [of getting dates].
Was the experience worth it? It was worth it in the sense that it was fun and people enjoyed.Â
Thanks, Agustin!Â
