She became a global sensation early on in her youth and has continued to stay in the limelight ever since. Each and every one of her albums has been unique and added a fresh twist to pop music. Miley Cyrus has grown up before the ever watching eyes of the public and has received tons of ridicule for her constantly changing personality. Throughout it all, I have been here on the sidelines, cheering on her many phases and enjoying every minute of it. From Hannah Montana, to swinging naked on a wrecking ball, to now, I have been supporting this clever musician. She never ceases to amaze me and that is why, seeing as her newest album, Younger Now, was just released a few days ago, I decided to take a trip down memory lane to see everything that has gotten her and her fans to this new and fabulous era of Miley.

Oh Disney, you crafty son of a gun, you. Hannah Montana was brilliant. The entire premise of the show was fascinating and it immediately captured the hearts of young girls across the nation. If you didn’t tune in to watch the shenanigans of Miley Stewart aka Hannah Montana and her infamous crew of crazies, then you were definitely not going to have anything to talk about at the lunch table the next day. Kids, teens, and parents alike fell in love with Miley the character and Miley the actress. The media portrayed her as this innocent youngling who was squeaky clean and the perfect role model for tweens everywhere. While the show may not have allowed her to show off her true self, it did allow her to fully showcase her talent to the world. Each episode featured her beautiful singing voice which established early on in her career that music was going to be the main focus of her fame.

Believe it or not, Miley, being the human that she is, grew up. I think many people forgot about that tidbit of information. Once she stopped being a kid, she stopped acting like one. The only difference? Her change was publicized. That’s it. Yes, she twerked on live TV and yes, her music became much more sexified, but that doesn’t make her insane. Au contraire, I think it proves the point that celebrities are just normal people. They go through things, they change, they grow, they make mistakes, and most importantly, they move on.

Since her “Britney moment,” Miley has sobered up, been speaking out on important political issues, including the past election, and has recently released new music. Younger Now is such a masterpiece. After her Dead Petz era, I’m not going to lie, I was a bit nervous to see what this new sound would be like. “Malibu” gave me immense hope and after just completing the album from start to finish, I can honestly say that this is her best music yet. The entire thing is beautifully crafted with each title spilling a different chapter of Miley’s life story.

Many people keep saying how happy they are that Miley has finally found herself. While I too am enjoying this free spirit Miley, I have to say, I think that she has known herself her whole life. Even when she was breaking societal norms, she was being true to who she was. There’s a reason Miley Cyrus, throughout her peaks and valleys, has stayed a household name. It’s because she is honest about herself and her views on the world around her. Yes, her opinions change, but so do mine and I have a hunch, yours do too. She is human, just as we are human, and my Lord, is she killing the life game right now. As a true and dedicated fan, I must say, I am incredibly happy to see her so happy and full of life. I can’t wait to see what else she has up her sleeve!

Jessica Ping

Notre Dame '19

Hey everyone! My name is Jessica Ping, I'm a senior here at Notre Dame, and I live in the palace of campus, aka Flaherty Hall! Generally you can find me on Instagram, watching Netflix, or singing with the Liturgical Choir. I would consider myself a professional napper. I'm just your typical college student who is still trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
