Reality television’s “Golden Family” (aka the Kardashian/Jenner clan) is definitely at the forefront of everything trendy, edgy, and sexy. From crop tops to piercings to all things girly, sparkly, and fun, each member of the Kardashian/Jenner clan has definitely perfected and contributed their own personal styles that are able to depict their personality.
With all the news surrounding the divorce between Kris and Bruce Jenner and the supposed leaking of Kim Kardashian-West’s intimate pictures, it seems as though the media has failed to call attention to a new look in Kylie Jenner’s fashion repertoire: overdrawn lips. In the past few months, Kylie Jenner has been spotted with significantly fuller and voluptuous lips. The change was seen as being so drastic that the media accused her of receiving lip injections (such as Juvaderm). In any case, Kylie Jenner has received a great amount of criticism over this new transformation.
Lip overdrawing is when you use a combination of makeup and magic to create lips that appear larger than they actually are. Okay, well maybe it does not involve literal magic, but it DOES require a really strong understanding of the properties of different makeups and a beginning level understanding of basic contouring techniques. It involves concealer and a good lip liner (and a couple other makeup tools) in order to manipulate the lighting, shape, and shadows of one’s lips. Depending on the amount of makeup and time one spends reshaping her lips, a person can have either have a subtle or drastic change in appearance.
What I personally have trouble comprehending is all of the negative reactions that Kylie Jenner is receiving for her new trend. Kylie is in such a mature career field and has so many adults surrounding her all the time that I feel as though the public sometimes forgets that Kylie Jenner is a teenage girl, trying out different makeup tricks in order to feel more confident about herself and her appearance. She is seventeen, and I would much rather hear that she is playing around with makeup instead of getting plastic surgery at such a young age.
I feel like society, especially women who can relate to ever having been self conscious about their appearances, needs to cheer Kylie Jenner on. Society has imposed a standard of beauty that is almost unattainable to the regular person (I mean come on, how can someone have THAT beautiful of skin). Independent, gorgeous women surround Kylie Jenner and I’m sure the pressure to compete against them can be intimidating at times (I mean, imagine having Kim Kardashian as your older sister).
I say, YOU GO GIRL! If adding a little more lip liner makes you feel more confident about your appearances, then I say you embrace it, rock it, and let your true self shine. I say next time you’re feeling edgy and want to break out of your shell but are too scared to do so, you take a lesson from Kylie Jenner’s playbook; if you can rock the confidence than you can rock the trend. Kylie Jenner does not care what society things, and neither should you.
