Meet freshman Adriana Sanchez (AKA Notre Dame’s cutest Puerto Rican architecture major). She’s a loud and social fashionista from Humacao, Puerto Rico that currently resides in Lyons Hall (2A to be exact). This cutie with a booty is the nicest and most comforting person ever. She’s genuine, unique, and isn’t afraid to be herself. HCND had the wonderful opportunity of being able to interview Adriana down in Lyon’s Lair this past week so that the lovely readers of HCND can get to know her as well.
Adriana, you dress up everyday and look so cute and stylish. How do you find the energy to wake up every morning to invest in looking so amazing and why do you recommend that other girls do the same?
I’m a big believer that it’s not about the actual products or the clothing you use, it’s about the time that you spend analyzing and appreciating yourself. When you invest this time for yourself, you understand your features better and how to highlight them. It makes you more positive and I really can’t go a day with out looking nice because I do not feel as productive.
Who is your style icon and how would you describe your own personal style?
Alexa Chung is definitely my style icon. She literally wears whatever she wants to wear. She’s not crazy or out there, but she wears what makes her feel good, which is something I want to live by. She doesn’t dress like Kim Kardashian. She doesn’t accentuate her boobs or butt all the time. She will wear collars and look gorgeous in pants. She looks like a mod hippie with a high neckline and I love it. As for my personal style, I gravitate towards things that feel natural. I would say my style is very organic. I like clothing that fits my body type and feels very natural to wear.
You describe yourself as being creative, spontaneous, and accepting. How did these traits influence you to major in architecture? What is one common misconception about architecture majors in general?
I love learning about how art is portrayed on buildings and we as architecture students have the ability to create art in a subtle and subconscious way. When you’re drafting and sketching you have to think about what’s logical about building something and how to turn that logic into art. A person has to take an area’s history and culture into consideration when creating buildings. I love how architecture is a window into the past. It’s very Midnight in Paris, very nostalgic and I like nostalgia. Arrogance aside, we architecture majors are our own breed, and have to balance the analytical and the creative. We have to tailor to what is aesthetically pleasing but what is fundamentally functional. I feel like people take our work for granted. We create the world around you and we subconsciously make you feel welcomed or not within a space.
Who is your number one celebrity crush?
PJ Liguori (aka kickthepj), the guy that makes the YouTube videos! GOOGLE HIM! He’s a creative soul but seems super down to earth in his videos, very humble AND HE’S BRITISH HELLOOOOO!
If you had to take someone on a tour of Notre Dame and could only take them to one place, where would you take them?
I feel like everyone could easily say the Grotto or Carroll lawn, but I’m honestly torn between Bond Hall Quad or just Riley in general. I pass by Riley and I get really nostalgic because it reminds me of when I came to Notre Dame for Summer Scholars in 2013. It’s actually the reason why I chose to apply to and attend Notre Dame. At first I was really skeptical about Notre Dame, but I loved the energy and everything just flowed so naturally. To channel John Green’s cheesy quote, I fell in love with Notre Dame the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.
What are your secret “go-to’s”?
Spotify is my life. Music is where I turn when I want to feel better. My taste in music and fashion both developed at a time in high school when I was trying to figure out who I was. Speaking of bands, I love Walk the Moon, The Zolas, HAIM, the Avett Brothers, The Tallest Man on Earth, She and Him, Swear and Shake, The Young Veins, and OF COURSE Vampire Weekend. I also love art museums. Blank walls with things hanging on them make me crazy and I don’t know why. I’m also obsessed with Subway cookies, like the traditional chocolate chip ones. They’re made so much better here than back at home. I’ve always loved YouTube videos. They’re my obsession. The movie, Midnight in Paris is the only thing I’m thinking about right now. HANDS DOWN though, Sherlock is my favorite television show out there.
If you guys haven’t already had the pleasure of meeting Adriana, you definitely should make an effort to do so. She’s an amazing friend, a person you can laugh and joke around with and a person that you can cry and get advice from. Notre Dame is definitely a better place with her around!
