Movies and Shows to Watch to Cope With No Study Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

I have always dreamed of studying abroad. My parents lived in London and raised me there until I was three years old. I had plans to finally return there this fall, but sadly because of this little thing called a pandemic, my dreams were destroyed. I know there are many other students who are currently experiencing a small heart break over not being able to study, eat, and live in the beautiful locations that they had planned on. Because there are a lot of us in this sad, depressing boat, who are headed home for a long three months of continued quarantine, I thought I’d make a list of movies and shows that can help you pretend you are in another reality and country.

My Brilliant Friend

This show centers around the experience of 2 best frenemies growing up in Naples, Italy in the 1950s. Besides the incredible storyline based on the award winning book series by Elena Ferrante, the beautiful Italian coast will have you adding Ischa to your bucket list. Don’t let the subtitles scare you away! With two series out, now is the perfect time to catch up.

Available for streaming on HBO Max.

Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris is the new trending Netflix show! It was just renewed for a second season and it features all the major attractions in Paris. Watch Emily from Chicago take on the Paris marketing scene, grow her instagram followers and even find love in the city that’s known for it!

Monte Carlo

Say what you want about Monte Carlo, but I absolutely love the Blaire Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) crossover. Who doesn’t want to pretend to be a British heiress in the South of France.

Available for streaming on HBO Max.

Up

This one might seem a bit out of left field but “Up” has it all. Up will make you cry, laugh, cry again, laugh and cry simultaneously; you get the point. It will also make you wish that you too could take a giant flying house, talking dog, and a boy scout to South America. It will give you the inspiration to start your own adventure book for when we can travel again!

Amanda Knox

This one is just a little reminder that not all study abroad trips go well… It is a very interesting documentary available on Netflix.

Rudy

And to finish off the list, we end with the classic Rudy, because even though you may not be in another country, HERE is pretty great.
