Procrastination Station

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Now that summer is upon us, the days can finally be filled with lazing around in the sun, drinking iced tea-lemonades, and surfing the web like there’s no tomorrow. As I’ve learned from four semesters of mastering the art of procrastination, there are tons of great websites for wasting time (see iwastesomuchtime.com). Here are some of my personal favorite sites to check out when you have time to kill:

1. Pinterest – Like the true female I am, I love Pinterest for absolutely no reason at all. I’ve pretty much planned my entire vegan, Pilates-doing, beachside life spread across eleven boards. Spanning everything from “Getting’ Crafty,” my DIY board, to “Nailing It,” a board dedicated to nail polishes and designs I want to try, Pinterest is the inspiration for most of my summer projects.

2. BuzzFeed – Who doesn’t love list upon list of reasons we love Jennifer Lawrence or the happiest facts in the world? Every time I click on one BuzzFeed list, it leads me to five more I have to check out immediately. I recently discovered that BuzzFeed now makes videos in addition to their lists, my favorite of which is “How to Annoy a New Yorker in 61 Seconds.”

3. YouTube – A classic. My favorite channels include DailyGrace, You Deserve a Drink, and Kid President. DailyGrace is a vlogger who does a video every weekday. Every day (except Monday) has a topic – Tuesday is commenting on comments, Wednesday is reviewing something, Thursday is a how to, and Friday is Sexy Friday. The chick who does the videos, Grace Helbig, is hilarious, awkward, and honest, everything you want in a vlogger and she has a bunch of YouTube friends who are equally hysterical! For example, Mamrie Hart, of You Deserve a Drink, has an awesome YouTube channel on which she creates a new drink for someone every week. While the potty humor can get to be a little much at times, the videos have great jokes and honor important people like Harry Potter fans and Lindsey Lohan.

4. Etsy – Don’t go on Etsy unless you’re prepared to buy some really cute but usually useless items. I’ve purchased everything from monogrammed bows to posters of my favorite movie quotes when left alone with Etsy for too long. I love using Etsy for birthday gifts! It gives you the opportunity to find some adorable and unique presents for the important people in your life. Just be sure to allow yourself enough time to browse and get your items ordered before the big day.

5. Tumblr – I follow some really fun things on Tumblr. Between the recipe blogs, Time magazine, and fashion sites, there are always interesting and inspiring things for me to look at! I definitely reblog quite a bit of preppy pics, but who doesn’t wish their wardrobe was full of Sperry’s and Kate Spade? Also, Tumblr gives me the chance to show off some of my own photography and baked goods! (Follow me! windycityheart.tumblr.com)

6. Pandora – While I am aware it’s only a music website, I often get distracted when I put on party music and dance around for hours on end. My current favorite is a shuffle of Summer Hits of the 90s and Summer Hits of the 2000s. Trust me on this one – it never fails to get me grooving. Side note: dance parties are an excellent workout.

7. Betches Love This – Given the title, it may sound a little crude, but Betches Love This is very entertaining. The language can be harsh, but the Betch List accurately describes my life to a certain degree. The site reviews TV shows like Revenge, Pretty Little Liars, and The Bachelor, adding its own sarcastic take on what happened in the latest episode. Additionally, they cover fashion, gossip, “bros,” and entertainment, making Betches Love This a great site for catching up on celebrity buzz.

8. Her Campus – If you’re here, you know Her Campus Notre Dame is a great resource for everything an Irish collegiette could possibly need! Between workouts and advice, browsing the stories on Her Campus always takes a solid hour or two.

Meet HCND's current Campus Coordinator and Editor-in-Chief! Originally from outside of Chicago, Sara is a Senior Peace Studies, Theology, and Italian major at Notre Dame (yes, that is three majors; no, she doesn't have any free time). Sara began writing for Her Campus Notre Dame in May of 2013 and quickly fell in love with the site and it's staff! After writing for the inagural editorial staff (shout-out to AnnaLee, Katie, and Lex!) for a semester, Sara decided to branch out and become an editor. She particularly enjoys doing interviews and sharing travel expereinces, as well as connecting with the HCND reader network through thought-provoking social commentaries.
