It looks as though spring has finally come to Notre Dame! Skies are blue, the flowers have arrived, and the finals we’re all trying to forget are right around the corner. Here are some definite signs that spring is here at last and here to stay.

1.  Flowers everywhere!

The tulips have bloomed, trees are flowering, and campus is bursting with color.

2.  The seniors are ready.

Senioritis is in full force. All thoughts of sadness have been banished by the upcoming excitement of Senior Week, the Kentucky Derby, Graduation, and no more classes and homework!

3.  DARTing.

What is more springtime at Notre Dame than DARTing? Here’s hoping you got the classes you wanted. If not, you can always stalk Class Search over the summer and during the first week of classes.

4.  You’ve thought about packing.

At some point, you’ve probably looked around your room, wondered how you acquired so much stuff this year, and worried how you’re going to pack it all. Time to donate a few things!

5.  Spring cleaning.

Among the many ways you can procrastinate, spring cleaning is my favorite. It’s nice to banish the salt stains, vacuum the carpet and throw the windows wide open.

6.  Game of Thrones.

This definitely isn’t unique to Notre Dame, but Game of Thrones is back, along with my ever-present girl crush on Daenerys and undying love for John Snow.

7.  No more winter coats or boots.

At long last, you can go out without your North Face puffer coat and L. L. Bean boots. All you need is a light jacket. You can also enjoy wearing flip-flops again!

8.  Summer plans.

You have probably figured out where you’re going to be this summer and started making plans. Maybe you’re off to your dream internship in an exotic city, heading to do some summer service, or finally going home to work and catch up with your hometown friends.

9.  Sunshine procrastination.

Another great form of procrastination is sitting outside in the sun (Vitamin D!) or taking a walk around campus. Leave your homework for later and enjoy the good weather.

10.  Sundresses and sunglasses.

I love getting to pull out my summer wardrobe. You can’t beat a floral sundress, jean jacket, sunglasses, and your pastel Keds.

11.  Music on the quad.

Spring has returned to campus when music is heard blasting from dorm rooms on warm afternoons. It’s also fun to pass Fieldhouse Mall when students are jamming or dancing.

12.  All iced everything.

No more hot beverages from Starbucks. Bring on the iced tea, caramel macchiatos, and coffee. It’s lovely weather for a Frappe.

13.  Dome pictures.

Sure, there is never a bad time to take a dome picture, but you probably can’t resist snapping one with flowers in it on your way to class. #blessed

14.  Blue Gold Game Weekend.

The release of The Shirt, Notre Dame Day, the Blue Gold Game, AnTostal, Pig Tostal…what a weekend!

15.  Smiling faces.

Everyone is happier when the sun comes out. Be sure to enjoy it and share your joy.

Notre Dame

Maria is finishing her Masters in English at Notre Dame. She has read many good books and several bad books, but she usually tries not to finish those. Her current favorites are: 1984, The Book Thief, The Tragedy Paper, Code Name Verity, Dr. Copernicus, I Am the Messenger, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and of course, Harry Potter. She is writing her second thesis on Harry Potter, exploring notions of authorship and reader agency in the digital age. She even managed to write her Capstone on British Children's Literature and designed her own Directed Readings Course on Notre Dame history during undergrad. Her favorite way to read is with a mug of tea and scented candles. When she doesn't have her nose stuck in a book, she can be found binging on the BBC (Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Merlin [RIP]). Her favorite color is purple, she studied abroad in London, and she enjoys being an amateur painter. She harbors a not-so-secret dream of one day writing a children's book, but until then, she is likely to be found reading them and writing letters whenever she gets a chance. She hopes to teach English or work in a university sharing her love of education.
