Summer is a wonderful time of year, full of sunshine, internships, days at the beach, pleasure reading, flip flops, sundresses, and sunglasses! However, if you’re in a relationship, you may not be 100% excited about summer. It’s tough to go from seeing your favorite person everyday, to maybe seeing them for a couple of weekends all summer. I’ve been there and I feel your pain (yay for LDRs)! Here’s my best advice for surviving a summer apart!

1.  Plan your next visit.

There’s a reason this is number one on the list. It always helps to know when you’re seeing each other next! Make a countdown and watch the days tick away. My boyfriend and I always make sure we have our next visit planned before one of leaves to go home.

2.  Set aside a time to talk each day.

Texting is a great way to send a quick I love you, but set aside a time in your day to call each other. It’s easier to talk about what you did in a daily phone call than trying to text it all or doing it every few days.

3.  Skype occasionally.

I’m a big fan of skype. You may not want to do it everyday, but every so often it’s great to see your favorite person’s face, instead of just hearing their voice.

4.  Send each other letters or little surprises.

Getting mail is one of my favorite things ever! Try sending each other a cute card or putting your Amazon Prime account to good use with a little surprise. Last semester I sent my boyfriend a happy non-finals care package with candy.

5.  Plan something special for when you’re back together.

This can be something fun like a nice dinner or boozy brunch. If you’re feeling more playful, plan a trip to the zoo or to a museum. Summer is also a great time to catch a concert or a baseball game. Find something you’ll both enjoy.

6.  Get a summer hobby.

This has nothing to do with your relationship, but it’s a great way to keep yourself busy. If you have something to look forward to in the evenings, it will help keep you from dwelling on being apart. I’m all for YA books and painting.

7.  Catch up with your friends.

This is another non-relationship piece of advice, but it will make you happy. Catch up with your besties from home, your roomie from school, the people you’re living with this summer, your new co-workers, you name it, be social!

8.  Come up with a cute way to say goodnight.

You probably think less about how you say goodnight when you see each other everyday, but while you’re apart it’s great to make that last text something sweet. My final text every night varies from day to day, but it has a few essential elements that send my love thoughtfully.

9.  Travel.

Take advantage of your long weekends and road trip or fly to see each other. Hopefully, you’ll get to visit a new city and do some exploring. You can Insta all your crazy adventures along the way and once you get there.

10.   Send each other selfies.

Everyone loves a good selfie, especially via Snapchat. Send them throughout your day with cute messages. You can always splice in snaps of what you’re up to as well.

Summer will be great, so don’t let the summer separation get you down. It won’t be long until you see each other again, have fun in the meantime!

Notre Dame

Maria is finishing her Masters in English at Notre Dame. She has read many good books and several bad books, but she usually tries not to finish those. Her current favorites are: 1984, The Book Thief, The Tragedy Paper, Code Name Verity, Dr. Copernicus, I Am the Messenger, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and of course, Harry Potter. She is writing her second thesis on Harry Potter, exploring notions of authorship and reader agency in the digital age. She even managed to write her Capstone on British Children's Literature and designed her own Directed Readings Course on Notre Dame history during undergrad. Her favorite way to read is with a mug of tea and scented candles. When she doesn't have her nose stuck in a book, she can be found binging on the BBC (Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Merlin [RIP]). Her favorite color is purple, she studied abroad in London, and she enjoys being an amateur painter. She harbors a not-so-secret dream of one day writing a children's book, but until then, she is likely to be found reading them and writing letters whenever she gets a chance. She hopes to teach English or work in a university sharing her love of education.
