At Her Campus Notre Dame, we all love to write it out–and now, we’ve found a group that loves to talk it out! We’re so excited to partner up with Notre Dames, and connect you to what our Dames are discussing on campus. Every Tuesday, the Notre Dames get together to talk about an issue that relates to gender on campus, across the country, or around the world. Here at HCND, we’ll give you a recap of the latest Talk It Out Tuesday discussion every week, so stay tuned for more. There is nothing quite like a Dame, and that’s why we love thee!
The Highlights:
Do you think you apologize too much?
Notre Dames discussed how women are far more likely to say “I’m sorry.” Not just when it’s appropriate, but whenever they need to fill a silence. Women apologize for doing their jobs, for incidents that weren’t their fault, and whenever they might need to fill the silence.
Girls who showed up shared situations: apologizing for when people bumped into them, when they’re trying to do their job, whenever there’s the slightest possibility of offense.
Notre Dames included two articles in their weekly newsletter: one from TIME Magazine and another from Salon. Both explored women apologizing, in real life and in media. These were used as a launching pad for discussion Tuesday night.
Some girls talked about their efforts to stop saying “sorry” so much and how it’s so much more difficult that you’d expect.
Girls mentioned other phrases that were used as “crutches,” much in the same way as “sorry.” “Is it okay if…” and “just” were both mentioned.
Discussing how women talk and how their speech is perceived is nothing new to Notre Dames; they’ve previously discussed “up talking” and how women communicate in general.
