Oktoberfest is an annual beer festival held in Munich, Germany. The festival lasts from mid-September to the first Sunday of October. It has more than 6 million people from all over the world in attendance each year! If you’re thinking of going, here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:
- DO: Make the effort to go to Oktoberfest!
-
You’ll get the amazing opportunity to try authentic German beer, dance, meet people from all over the world and eat many, many pretzels. Not only is the festival itself so much fun, but the city of Munich is beautiful to explore!
- DON’T: Wait until the last minute to book flights and hotels
-
Because it’s such a large event and so many people travel to Munich at this time of year, flights and hotels can get pretty expensive. You’re likely to find a great deal if you can book a couple of months in advance.
- DON’T: Go for only one day
-
The festival is huge and has so much to offer. There are the famous beer halls, but there are also tons of authentic and delicious food vendors (bratwurst! pretzels!) and fun rides and attractions. If you have more time to enjoy and explore the festival, take advantage of it!Â
- DO: Buy the 3 Day Travel Pass in Munich!
-
It’s only 17 euros and gives you unlimited access to Munich public transportation for 3 days. It’s the perfect amount of time, and trust me, you will need access to public transportation to navigate Munich!
- DO: Wear a dirndl or lederhosen!!
-
It is so fun to dress up for the festival in the traditional German outfits, and they make a perfect souvenir. However, they can get as expensive as 200 euros or cost as little as 30 euros. Leave yourself some time before you want to go to the festival so that you can shop around and find the best deal.
- DON’T: Arrive late in the day, especially on weekends
-
Try to get there as early as possible (I’m talking 7 am)! On Saturdays and Sundays, people line up for hours before the gates open at 9 am so they can run to get a table in one of the beer halls. You will want a table, so try to arrive early!
- DO: Explore the city!
-
If you have the time, try to get out into the city of Munich and explore! Go to Marienplatz to see the incredible central square and shop around, or spend some time at the English Garden, an urban park with a beer garden.
