If you’re like me, waking up to that blaring alarm every morning can be a struggle (especially if you’re one of the poor, unfortunate souls taking an 8:20). With droopy eyelids, you may manage to crawl out of bed, chug a cup of coffee, and get your sweats on to make the trek to class.
I get it—mornings aren’t always the happiest time of day. But they don’t have to be the bane of your existence! With a little work and training, you can actually teach yourself to wake up happy and enjoy the calm and peace of the morning.
1. Go to bed around the same time every night.
I know this can be hard, but at least during the weekdays try your best to maintain a regular sleeping schedule. If you’re constantly sleep deprived, getting up in the morning is never going to be pleasant. But if you go to bed every night and get up at the same time every morning, your body will get used to it and feel more awake in the morning.
2. Find the right alarm.
Does your alarm send your heart racing every time it goes off? Whether it’s a song you like or gentle music, find an alarm that wakes you up more gradually and doesn’t scare you awake. Take a look on the App Store for tons of free alarm clocks with different ways to motivate you to get up.
3. Get things done the night before.
Tidy up your room, pick out your clothes for the next day, and pack up your backpack so you’re not stressed out while getting ready. You’ll thank yourself for making the morning that much easier.
4. Take 20 minutes to eat breakfast (and drink coffee!)
This is something I swear by. I have no idea how people can start their day without eating breakfast and drinking a steaming cup of coffee. Keurigs make it super easy to brew a quick cup even if you’re half asleep, and bananas and granola bars are great to keep in your room for breakfast. Not only will you feel more fueled up for the day, taking a little time to eat will allow you to appreciate the peace and quiet of the morning (or catch up on emails you got overnight).
5. Appreciate the morning.
If you have an 8:20, chances are you’re up before most of the other people on campus. Appreciate the still and quiet of the morning and keep an eye out for the sunset. There’s something beautiful about getting up early and making the most of your day!
