Why You Should Watch New Girl Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

I am not an avid TV watcher. I usually lose interest with dramatic shows pretty quickly (except PLL, never PLL) and only occasionally indulge in comedies. Even when I do watch comedies though, I’m not really the laugh-out-loud kind of person. I can acknowledge something is funny, but typically a scripted TV show will not incite an outwardly amused response.

But then there’s New Girl.

The show is quite magical. It is funny and witty and everything I never knew television could be. I watched all of the seasons on Netflix, which is a real feat for me. Plus, I actually laugh at it. There are just so many hilarious aspects that culminate into this majestic television program.

1. The characters are real:

These people are definitely not doctors having sex in a hospital or upper-east side teenagers getting drunk in luxurious penthouses. Jess, Winston, Coach, Nick, Schmidt and CeCe are human beings with human problems. They aren’t rich or unrealistically beautiful (except for Zooey Deschanel’s eyes, which are completely mesmerizing). To be honest, their lives are kind of a mess. I don’t want to be them, but I do enjoy watching them.

2. The dynamic between the roommates is #goals and at the same time, not:

They are all so openly candid with one another, making for both endearing and awkward interactions. They criticize each other but at the same time love each other. They invade each other’s personal lives without permission, but it’s usually out of care for one another. While I don’t think I would always be game to have my dysfunctional roommates intrude into my personal business, I am a bit jealous of their authentically odd friendship.

3. The unapologetic humor:

Nowadays it seems like race and religion are such sensitive topics that have to be tip-toed around in order to safeguard everyone’s feelings. New Girl does an excellent job of playing into the diversity of the characters by making jokes about their different backgrounds. By equally mocking each character, whether it be Jewish Schmidt, black Winston or white Jess, New Girl creates a refreshingly candid atmosphere which is at the same time clearly not hateful. I think that the show creates a more truthful depiction of how friends interact.

4. The Bromance of Nick, Winston and Schmidt (and sometimes Coach):

Even though Jess is the main character, the bromance between the guys of the loft is really interesting. They are all so drastically different, which creates a rapport that kills me every time. Bitter Nick, overeager Winston and a**hole Schmidt create a trifecta of bros unlike any I’ve ever seen. Individually they can stand alone, but together they are so comically ruthless and supportive that it’s even better.

5. Schmidt:

Schmidty—what a gem. I could kiss whoever created the character of Schmidt. He’s horribly overconfident, yet still insecure and craving validation; completely offensive, but at the same time compliments others; cruel and mean, but also loving and thoughtful; totally unlikeable, but completely loveable. It’s confusing. All I know is that his one-liners are pure genius. Kudos to New Girl for coming up with such a fellah.

I purposefully didn’t give away too many details because honestly you should just watch the show yourself. Take a break from that show you think is great and use that instead get to know the roommates in the loft. You won’t regret it.
