10 Tips to Survive a Student House

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

It’s fair to say that I have learnt a thing or two about student living during my time at university, so I’ve put together a few useful tips and tricks to help you on your way.

1. Invest in a hot water bottle (trust me, student houses are FREEZING).

2. Ear plugs will be your new best friend.

3. If you’re afraid of spiders, do a little inspection of your room before you move in so you don’t suddenly find one crawling across your pillow during the night.

4. Stay on good terms with your landlord; at the end of the day they will be the one who fixes anything that may go wrong.

5. Always lock your bedroom door when you go out –  burglaries are unlikely but it’s never worth the risk.

6. Do your dishes as you go along – it’s way easier than letting them pile up, leaving the kitchen a mess and your housemates annoyed.

7. Create a cleaning rota- that way everyone contributes to the household chores (duties should be shared).

8. Also make a rota for buying necessities such as toilet paper, washing up liquid and bin bags.

9. Decorate your room with lots of photos, buntings and fairy lights – when you’re having a bad day it’ll make you feel a million times better.

10. Get an extra set of keys cut and give them to someone you trust. If you accidently lock yourself out of your house/bedroom, you’ll be able to get back in in no time (without having to pay a ridiculous fee).
