As many of you know, after a heavy Friday night at Ocean the last thing you’ll feel like doing is picking up the vodka again; that is until next week anyway! So here’s our list of fun things to do with your friends or housemates that don’t involve alcohol. Let’s go!
1. Cook together.
As students, I’m sure we’re all guilty of knocking together some pesto pasta and calling it a masterpiece, but more advanced cooking can be super fun when you do it with your friends and can result in yummy food that you just wouldn’t cook for one. You could do it Come Dine With Me style and have everybody cook something different for a few nights in a row, or simply go all out and cobble together a three course meal on a Saturday night.
2. Investigate Nottingham.
Sure, it’s no Paris, but there are some super nice spots in Nottingham to have a wander through if you’re in need of some fresh air. Close to Lenton is The Park, a super fancy residential area that’ll really make you wish you were a grown-up with enough money to rent a fancy flat. In the city there’s also the trendy Lace Market area that has boutiques, cafes and, of course, Annie’s Burger Shack! It’s worth having a look around and remembering that there are (some!) nice areas in Nottingham. Of course, there’s Wollaton Park, too, more commonly known as Batman’s House, it’s free to have a walk around the park and is great for Instagramming silly pics. Also, if you’re not too squeamish, don’t forget to take a look inside the house, their collection of over a hundred stuffed animals is something else!
3. Have a games night.
You probably haven’t played Monopoly since the age of 10 (unless your parents make you play at Christmas… or is that just me?), but don’t underestimate the value of a board game when you’re playing with a group of friends. Team games such as Articulate are fun for revealing the competitive side of your housemates (though avoiding house domestics may be necessary!), and card games are a cheap and entertaining way to spend an evening. If you’re looking for something a little more grown up, Cards Against Humanity is great to play in a big group. Either way, you get to stay in your pyjamas which is always a bonus!
4. Revisit your childhood.
I know that bowling is definitely not considered to be the epitome of cool, but it can be a great way to spend a hung-over Saturday afternoon. The novelty of it increases the fun and you can laugh with your friends at how terrible you are. Ice skating is also another fun activity that you’ve probably not done since your early teens. At the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, students can skate for just £5, so why not give it a try?
