Three weeks ago, I moved abroad to study at The University of Connecticut. A week into the semester ‘snowmageddon’ (storm Juno, to give it its proper name) hit, covering the campus in over two feet of snow. If, like me, you’ve never experienced trying to get to class in these freezing conditions, I’ve created a guide on how the students here dress for college in the winter.
Â
School Pride
Go Huskies! You’ll never forget which University you attend here. School pride is a massive thing and you’ll find some particularly keen members of the cohort who are always dressed head to toe in branded sportswear, sweaters and T-shirts. You can even get UConn pyjamas if you really want to go all out. This is great when you don’t know what to wear to a 9am class as you basically have a school uniform again.
Â
Shoes
When it snows, it really snows. Walking on the pavement, or shall I say sidewalk, is like competing at Olympic speed skating every time you have lectures. If you want to look like a true New Englander and actually have a chance of staying on your feet for more than ten seconds, either Timberlands or Bean Boots are the way to go. Luckily, this style of boot is very on trend at the moment- stylish and practical!
Â
Â
Coats
When it’s forecast to go as low as -20 overnight, you can’t take chances just wearing a jacket. There are some great coats online and for me it’s essential to go for goose down and a fur hood for maximum warmth.
Â
Bags
On campus the backpack is king and The North Face seems to be the most popular brand. It is great how easy they are for lugging around your stuff rather than the oversized, arm ache inducing handbag I use at Nottingham. MiPac do some stylish alternatives, so you can have the best of both worlds!
Â
Hopefully I’ll make it through the snow this year and *fingers crossed* not fall over on the ice!
