Excited to be home?
Home means a break from university life and a chance to catch up with family and friends, but it doesn’t always go as expected.
1. Reunited with family
Expectation:
As much as you hate to admit, you missed them and they probably missed you too. Cue tears, hugs and declarations of love. Home is where the family is.
Reality:
Half smiles. Your dad gives you a manly pat on the back. Your sibling asks you when you left and how are you back so quickly. Emotions aren’t a British trait. They’re tearing up inside though (probably).
At least your cat is happy to see you…right? RIGHT?
2. How much work you’ll get done over the Easter
Expectation
Let’s see… I’ll give myself a few days off, and then go into hardcore work mode, doing 8 hours a day…At this rate, I’ll be done by the second week! Easy! After that I can enjoy my new earned freedom.
#studygoals Even after a few hours of studying you’re like: Wow! This is actually really easy! It’s just like refreshing my memory! I’m so glad I worked hard throughout the semester. Work is so rewarding! My degree is so interesting!
Reality
Proceed to give yourself three weeks off. Cram. Realise you have learned nothing over the course of the semester. You have no time. You understand nothing. It’s just really, really boring. ‘At least now you know for next time…’ your sibling says, smugly.
3. Rediscovering your hometown
Expectation
Nottingham is cool and all, but what can compare to the nostalgia of the place where you grew up? The pub you used to get drunk in? The one club that everyone went to because there was literally no other choice?
Reality
It’s shit. Literally nothing happens here. You are reminded of why you left.
4. Meeting up with old friends
Expectation
You’ve missed them all loads because you haven’t seen them in ages. You are going to meet up with them so many times this holiday, and do so many fun things!
Reality
Your holidays don’t align very well. This person is away this week, and then another person is away the week after. Also, why is trying to make plans to meet up in a group chat so hard? Stay on topic, people!
5. Your Easter egg
Expectation
Something like this would be pretty cool. It’s almost too pretty to eat.
But you would also very happily settle for this.
Reality
“Where’s my Easter egg this year, mum?”
“Oh I thought you wouldn’t want one. Here you go, have this.”
Thanks, mum.
