Fashion Watch: The Stylish Movies You Need to See

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

You may tell your parents that your time at university is spent reading Ulysses, attending a weekly yoga class and eating kale, but in reality there is also a lot of your life allocated to procrastination. This week I endeavour to improve your Netflix binge with some recommendations of my favourite fashion-themed viewing delights.

1. The September Issue

The September Issue of Vogue is the most important of the year and this documentary follows fashion icon Anna Wintour while she prepares to make an impact. Her job as Editor-In-Chief takes her all over the world and it’s a pleasure to see her classic outfits and iconic sunglasses collection follow her every step of the way. There are plenty of fashion shoots, petty arguments and last minute changes which evoke a real life Devil Wears Prada. If you love reading fashion magazines this is one for you.

2. Dior and I

I have always loved Dior as a designer and even visited his museum on the French coastal town of Granville to see his couture in person. This film welcomes you to the backstage of this world and follows the new artistic director, Raf Simmons, designing his first collection. Traditionally a designer of ready to wear collections, Simmons encounters many challenges but manages to pull off the catwalk in the end. In such a flamboyant industry he is surprisingly shy and it is touching when he summons up the courage to walk out at the end of his Parisian show (which was completed with walls covered in real flowers!). The focus may be on Simmons but my favourite part was the intriguing history of Dior’s couture house and the atelier who work through the night to expertly sew the designers’ creations.

3. Iris

This feel good film is about Iris Apfel, a 93 year old who is living proof that fashion is not just for the young. She is described an ‘artist’ and it is fascinating to see her style, confidence, and wit seep through the screen. She is a lover of the quirky and bold but also has a history with The Whitehouse. After watching this I think most people would love Iris to be their Grandma, just think of the dressing up opportunities!
