Kylie Jenner seems to be everyone’s favourite girl crush right now and there’s no wonder – she’s undeniably gorgeous and just oozes cool – we definitely weren’t looking quite so fierce at the young age of 17!
Kylie’s Instagram is full of amazing snaps of her sporting some seriously enviable makeup, including the 90’s nude /pink-brown mouth that she’s becoming so well known for bringing back into the spotlight. Even with the come-back of 90’s grunge-girl fashion I, for one, had believed that the brown lip had been left behind for good. This is probably because I thought it was rather hard to wear and not the most flattering of palettes. However the 90’s-inspired nudes have come back, with overdrawn lip liner to match! I can’t deny that it looks fab when done right, giving a sexy, done-but-not-too-done appeal.
Although there is a bit of debate over whether or not Kylie’s lips owe anything to lip fillers to explain how amazingly plump her lips are looking, I think there’s some overdrawing going on regardless. With the right technique, this can make your lips appear fuller. However it can be dangerous territory to venture into, so make sure your look is subtle by following your natural lip shape but taking your lip liner pencil just over your natural line. To me it looks like Kylie tends to flatten out her cupid’s bow somewhat to again give a poutier look, so try drawing almost straight across rather than going for the normally sought after heart-shaped mouth.
I’ve read on the beauty blogosphere grapevine that the exact products Kylie uses are by MAC cosmetics. The lipstick she uses is in the shade Velvet Teddy, and apparently she also loves lip liners in Whirl and Soar, sometimes just using a lip liner alone to fill in the whole lip. This can sometimes be a nice alternative to a lipstick and makes the slight overdrawing of your lips a bit easier to control. Although MAC lipsticks come in at a slightly pricey £14, they are fantastic lipsticks – especially the Amplified finish range which sit at the perfect place between nicely moisturising and rich in pigmentation.
Here are some alternatives to these products, which seem to have completely sold out since Kylie shared her secret. Lipsticks include:
Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick in Rose Tweed 4
Seventeen Stay Pout lipstick in Just a Fling
Also lip liners, such as Rimmel Exagerrate in Eastend Snob 63, or Illamasqua Lip Colouring pencil in Woo are similar, but I don’t think you can beat the creamy consistency of MAC’s Whirl for this look. We’ll have to keep sitting patiently until they restock!
If you still think that a real Kylie nude isn’t going to be super flattering on you, try a more pink-based shade to channel the look in a more wearable way. Candidates are MAC Patisserie, and Rimmel Lasting Finish in 077 Asia or Lasting Finish by Kate in 08. Rimmel lipsticks have a flawless formula and I would recommend these lipsticks in any colour – plus they come in at around a fiver!
Swatches of lipsticks I picked up in Superdrug. Left – Rimmel Lasting finish in 077 Asia. Right – Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate in 08
To achieve the matte finish which appears to be Miss Jenner’s favourite, you can always pat over your lipstick with a tissue, then apply a thin layer of translucent powder to mattify the whole thing – something like ELF HD Powder (http://eyeslipsface.co.uk/en/restofworld/powder/high-definition-powder/i…) would do the job fine.
Even though I am a red lip fanatic, I think when MAC restock I may have to treat myself to a nude lip combo, and see if it transforms me into an uber-cool bombshell like Kylie (*fingers crossed*).
Will you be trying out a 90’s nude?
