The anticipation was high at the world-famous Empress Ballroom in Blackpool last Sunday, as the venue overflowed with over 500 university students from across the UK and a crowd of thousands. At the biggest and best dance event on the university calendar, Notts proudly took to the floor with their successful DanceSport team, comprising both couples who have only been dancing at the Latin, Ballroom and Salsa society since September and more advanced, experienced dancers. Many of our newbies and novices cha chaâed their way to the final 6, against 160 competitors in each category! Following the previous weekâs success in Castleford – dominating as the number one northern university – Notts sustained this position and was crowned the 4th best university against over 35 universities nationwide – a ranking up from last yearâs nationals. Nottingham also won the group dance section âOffBeatâ with their candy-infused extravaganza, with slick and innovative choreography by Economics student Connor Duggan.
For Ballroom and Latin enthusiasts, itâs not only the results that give rise to the 5am starts, 14 hour competition days, and rigorous training. An electric team spirit and a true passion for dancing is displayed with elegance and pride come competition day. Working alongside some of the country’s leading teachers, this very drive and passion for dance has seen the society gone from strength to strength in recent years in rankings and size. The team welcomes new members of all abilities next term to join their friendly, supportive dance community.
