Last night the young indie band Fronteers took to the stage for an uplifting, punchy gig at The Bodega, playing to a small yet energetic crowd of indie enthusiasts. Having played only a handful of gigs since their formation in 2014, including recently supporting big bands such as The Courteeners and Pretty Vicious, the little-known band eagerly set out to impress their crowd from the off.
The four nineteen year olds from Hull kicked-off with some promising singles, such as ‘It’s Up To Me Now’. Whilst these strapping rock melodies were undeniably addictive, any sort of variation from track to track was unfortunately lacking. The one single which stood out to me was, of course, their impressive gimmick-free tune, ’Youth’, which parades appealing harmonies and the gritty vocals of Andy and James. The band echo some hooks similar to the likes of Arctic Monkeys, with a more pop-driven approach – nothing particularly refreshing or unprecedented.
Unfortunately, the gig lacked anything new as the crowd’s energy was often being broken up by the sometimes monotonous chords; tedious sounds which are all too familiar to indie fans. However, Fronteers have managed to draw a lot of female attention despite only playing a few gigs and have, as a result, several popular singles under their belt. With more releases, hopefully ones which will help to vary their repertoire, they might find themselves gaining significant popularity.
