Review: Spending the Bank Holiday with Beach Baby and Babeheaven

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Beach Baby brought an alternative punk-esque vibe to The Bodega on Bank Holiday Sunday with an upbeat but intimate gig. The night began with the melodic support act, Babeheaven. Performing their debut song ‘Heaven’, the female lead, Nancy Anderson, killed it. Her dreamy notes added a tropical element to the atmosphere, which was a brilliant start to the event. Babeheaven were perfect for the Bank Holiday- drink in hand, accompanied by a (slightly) warm and chilled atmosphere, it would have been perfect if only I didn’t have to go to ‘work’ (the library) the next day…

So, the main event: Beach Baby opened with ‘Sleeperhead’ – their best song in my opinion! They were upbeat throughout and bounced off the audience’s energy during the set. With simultaneous guitar and piano playing (v. impressive), Ollie Pash and Lawrence Pumfrey paraded about the small stage, swishing their long locks of brown hair.

Whilst there were some opportunities to converse with the audience, these were few and far between. Mention of a ‘nerf’ gun/game was about all of the dialogue that Ollie and Lawrence engaged the audience in and this went straight over the crowd’s head, quite literally. This was a bit of a missed opportunity. In such an intimate gig setting, conversation with the audience becomes common-place and would’ve made the quartet more relatable to the small, engaged audience.

But apart from this minor complaint, the overall gig had a good atmosphere.  Closing with an extended instrumental which got the audience pumped for the finale, Beach Baby were in their element. The audience clearly enjoyed themselves, clapping, singing and cheering along to the band’s newest singles.

So what’s next? With later gigs scheduled for Brighton and Cambridge, Beach Baby are powering through their headline tour – with previous sold-out shows in London, the band’s home town.

Watch this space; Her Campus Nottingham awards Beach Baby 3 out of 5 stars.
