Top 10 Christmas Movies You Have To Watch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

There is truly nothing better than a classic Christmas movie to get you in the festive mood! So stop stressing about all the presents you haven’t yet bought, or all the work you know you need to get done in the holidays, and enjoy one of these great movies…

1. Home Alone (1990)

‘An eight-year-old troublemaker must protect his house from a pair of burglars when he is accidentally left home alone by his family during Christmas vacation’

Home Alone is truly a Christmas classic – even if you’ve seen it way too many times, you can still laugh/cringe at Kevin’s antics and it’s always fun to watch!

2. Elf (2003)

‘After inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his ungainly size, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole is sent to the U.S. in search of his true identity’

It’s rare that you find a Christmas movie that manages to give you a warm fuzzy feeling whilst still actually being funny – but Elf definitely fulfills both of these categories. Plus, a film starring both Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel can never go wrong!

3. It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

‘An angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed’.

This movie really does stand the test of time, and is likely to make you shed a tear or two before the perfect happy ending. Yes it is very sentimental, but aren’t all the best Christmas films?

4. Love, Actually (2003)

‘Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.’

The list of stars in this movie is long and distinguished: Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy, Liam Neeson, Rowan Atkinson – and more! You would also have to be a hard cynic not to find the romance in this movie adorable.

5. The Polar Express (2004)

‘A young boy embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole on the Polar Express. During his adventure he learns about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas.’

This movie would be perfect for watching with your younger siblings or cousins as it’s sure to get them excited!

6. The Holiday (2006)

‘Two women troubled with guy-problems swap homes in each other’s countries, where they each meet a local guy and fall in love.’

Another fluffy romantic movie to make you feel the love this Christmas!

7. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

‘On the outskirts of Whoville, there lives a green, revenge-seeking Grinch who plans on ruining the Christmas holiday for all of the citizens of the town.’

Something about Jim Carrey and Christmas movies just makes for a perfect combination!

8. Frozen (2013)

‘When the newly crowned Queen Elsa accidentally uses her power to turn things into ice to curse her home in infinite winter, her sister, Anna, teams up with a mountain man, his playful reindeer, and a snowman to change the weather condition.’

If you really must sing ‘Let It Go’ again, be sure to belt it out Mariah-style.

9. The Santa Clause (1994)

‘When a man inadvertently kills Santa on Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place.’

This movie will remind you of how magical it feels to believe in Santa!

10. The Snowman (1982)

As it’s only six minutes long, the classification of the The Snowman as an actual movie is debatable, but it’s status as a nostalgic Christmas classic really isn’t!
