Uni News: Top 4 Stories Of The Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Her Campus Nottingham brings you a round-up of what’s been going on in Notts in the past month!

King of Prison Jailed for Dangerous Driving

Think back. It’s a year ago in April and the sun is beginning to show its first signs of re-awakening. A glorious time for all; but all you can think about is your intense craving for an ice-cold treat. The famous Calippo, fan’s favourite the Fab or a simple 99! All almost impossible to turn down but you’ve got to focus; hands back on the wheel and get through this traffic.

You’d think any sane person would have the same outlook, but not for Mr Marlon King, who has been jailed for 18 months after causing a pile up on the A46 near Newark while eating an ice-cream at the wheel of his Porsche in April of last year. One man caught up in the crash had to be flown to hospital where he spent 3 weeks recovering. Let’s not be too harsh on the former Wigan player however; he is a footballer and footballers have special rights
 right?

It’s not the first time King has been sent to prison, with other offences including an altercation with a woman inside a London club which ended with her receiving a broken nose.

Who knew a Fab could be so dangerous?

Scorching June to Come

If the past few days are anything to go by then in June we’re set to witness even more disposable BBQs round the back of student’s homes, even more student’s ‘revising’ in the sun, and of course even more shorts.

Last weekend just gone is set to be the benchmark for the hottest June in a decade around Nottingham, something which may prove problematic for those final exams. But let’s look at this in a positive way. The sun generally makes people happy right?

In anticipation of this hot weather, Nottingham City Council is planting 500,000 flowers in the next two weeks. So grab your sunnies, get the shorts on and throw yourself down one of those water slide contraptions if that sort of thing appeals to you.

New Leisure Attraction Opens in Notts

Admittedly during the exam period it seems all you feel you can think about is revision, revision and more revision. It comes to the point where you almost feeling guilty when letting your mind wander to the idea of going out on a night-out; a trip to the shops brings you out in hot sweats. And this glorious weather which hopefully is set to stay, just acts as a huge temptation.

We deserve a break and we need a break to make all that revision even more efficient – so why not visit Nottingham’s latest attraction. Si5 Spy Missions is a day out like no other. Based on Rick Street near the Victoria Centre, participants are tasked with escaping a top security military vessel. In teams, you will be set puzzles and challenges in order to get off of this fictional vessel and stop the ‘bad guys’ from firing a set of nuclear missiles – very topical indeed.

So if you fancy becoming Nottingham’s next hero then get down to Rick Street – and perhaps if you manage to successfully complete the task you’ll be dubbed as Robin Bond Hood.

18 Year Old Stabbed

Now to more serious news: an 18 year old man was stabbed on Friday 16th May at around 6pm in the Chilwell. Six police cars and an ambulance were called to the scene as the man was taken to Queens Medical Centre and it is believed that his injuries are not life-threatening.

Another 18 year old male has been taking in for questioning on suspicion of assault; however there are currently no details as to why the attack happened and police were quick to announce that they believe this to be an isolated incident.
