Getting healthy always seems to be at the top of everyone’s list, but when people add this to a resolution’s list many are only thinking of their physical health or a diet they are going to try for this year. Many fail to include the most important health goal and that is mental health.
What is Mental Health and Why it is important? The dictionary definition of mental health is “a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being” and that is absolutely correct. Being in college can really take a toll on a person’s mental health from high levels of stress to lack of sleep. College is not the best for anyone’s mental health if they do not know how to manage. The main reason that taking care of your mental health should be on your resolutions list is that of its disastrous consequences. Some consequences of ignoring mental health are depression, a decline in social life, poor grades, lack of motivation, thoughts of suicide, and many more. But do not worry– taking care of your mental health can be easy.
How to help improve it. Taking care of your mental health doesn’t have to be a stressful task. Here are some ways to improve your mental health:Take up an activity that is non-stressful and has no requirements. For example, reading a book or coloring can calm you down and give you relaxing vibes. Make a daily schedule. This allows you to have an idea of what needs to be done in a timely fashion. For instance, no more last-minute stress because you forgot a paper was due. Go for a walk around campus. It helps clear your mind and you can just focus on the beauty of nature. Play a game online. This allows you to take a moment and shift your focus, and avoid all of the stress you’re used to. Take a mental day every once in a while. It gives you time to be stress-free and allows you to recuperate your mind.
Mental health is always a second thought. It is better to make sure that this year you focus more on it, as it can play a huge role in your personal growth and well being. Taking a little time each day to just focus on yourself goes a long way in improving mental health. As you add this to your resolution list, remember mental health is the main health that drives you as a person and it should never be forgotten or neglected.
