13 Top Pop Culture Costumes for 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.
Trapped without an idea for a last minute Halloween costume? Take some inspiration from some of the biggest happenings in pop culture this year. Here are 13 lucky ideas from the hottest trends, movies, music, and celebrities of 2013.

1. ThrowBack Thursday

The biggest social media trend this year is #tbt, so why not incorporate that into your Halloween costume? Pick one of your favorite #tbt pictures and recreate the image with your costume. No ideas? Find a picture of yourself from Halloween in elementary school use that as your inspiration! Don’t forget to include the original picture as a part of your costume.

2. Les Misérables

The musical of the year has completely opened the field for French Revolution inspired costumes. With a slew of wonderful characters to portray, all you have to do is pick your look. Dressing in rags will make you look just like Éponine, or if you have plans with a group, pick a bunch of characters and use that as a theme. A great couples costume is the crazy ThĂ©nardiers.

3. Sharknado

Over the summer, the SyFy channel brought us a movie based on the worst natural disaster ever to hit the airways: the Sharknado. Honestly, can you think of anything better than a tornado that shoots sharks into cities? Okay, maybe you can, but it does make for a wonderfully fun costume. Wear all grey and glue a couple of stuffed sharks to your shirt and pants and take a bite out of Halloween. Was that cheesy enough for you?

4. Gravity

The out-of-this-world movie about two astronauts was just released, perfect timing for Halloween. An astronaut suit may be one of the more difficult costumes to make, but it is definitely worth it. You would need a helmet, a white jacket with your name and an American flag, and space boots. There may be pollution in the city, but we do have enough oxygen to get you through the night.

5. Great Gatsby

While a flapper costume is always a classic, it is even bigger this year because of the release of the remake of The Great Gastby, the American classic set in the 1920s. Any flapper costume will fit the bill, and these can be found in a variety of colors in lots of costume shops. If you need an idea for a couple’s costume, there is nothing better than Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, old sport.

6. Panda Cub

The uber-adorable, recently named panda cubs of the Zoo Atlanta have stolen everyone’s hearts. Dress as one of the fuzzy little cubs, or find a friend and be New York’s own Mei Lun and Mei Huan. You can either wear a full panda suit, or make a costume with just plain black and white clothes and a lot of face makeup.

7. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

If you are one of the wonderful people who loves Harry Potter but unfortunately feels like people would not approve of an HP related costume because it is “no longer relevant” (even though Harry will never be gone as long as there are those who remain loyal to him), you are in luck! It was recently announced that J.K. Rowling is writing the screenplay for a new movie based on the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Get a head start on costumes by dressing as your favorite beast from the magical universe, be it a hippogriff or a bowtruckle.

8. Government Shutdown

Fortunately, the US Government has reopened, but let’s not forget the 16 days when it was shut down. Dress as your favorite shut down monument, whether it is a Washington D.C. staple (to be the Washington Monument you just need to wear all white and a pointy white hat), or go local and be a shut down Lady Liberty.

9. The Fox

Norwegian comedy duo Ylvis’s masterpiece song and video about what noise a fox makes has taken the internet by storm, so copy their costumes and dress as a fox. But you have to make sure not to give away the answer to the age-old question: what does the fox say?

10. Thrift Shop

One of the biggest songs of the year is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s “Thrift Shop,” and you can use their lyrics to create an original and interesting costume. Sport Macklemore’s classic fur (or faux fur) coat, dress in all pink (‘cept the gator shoes, those are green), or go to a thrift shop and find an assortment of clothes that do not match AT ALL.

11. Wreaking Ball

There will undoubtedly be tons of Miley Cyrus’s wherever you go this Halloween, so if the “We Can’t Stop” singer is who you want to replicate, try going out of the box. Instead of being Miley at the VMAs, be the wrecking ball. Wear solid grey and decorate your shirt to look like a chain with a grey tutu or petticoat with a skirt to be the ball itself.

12. Roar

Want a costume that is inspired by this year’s music but not as complicated? Channel your inner Katy Perry/Tarzan and dress in your best jungle theme. Pick any animal print or costume: lion, leopard, tiger, zebra; and practice your best ROARRRR! If you want to be funny at the same time, try to go as a giant elephant, and don’t forget the trunk.

13. Pregnant Kate/Kate with George

Fan of the royal family? Then you have to know that the cutest royal of them all is Prince George! The newest addition to the royal family may be a difficult costume, so instead dress as his trendsetting mother, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Pick one of her trendy maternity outfits along with a pillow tummy, or be the new mum with a doll posing as your royal baby.
