6 Ways to Make Peace with Your Curly Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

I was born with the blessing of bright red and super curly hair (just think of Princess Merida from the Disney movie, Brave). Some would say that my hair is unique, voluminous, or beautiful, but if you asked me at any point throughout my K-12 years I probably would have said it was hideous. I hated everything about my hair and it honestly took away from my self confidence. I dreamed of long, straight blonde hair, something that I would never have. So there I was, a middle schooler with a gallon of curly hair and a flat iron. The daily 450 degree heat definitely did not do good, and slowly but surely damaged my natural hair. Looking back on the battle between my hair and me, I have come to the conclusion that part of my problem was that I did not understand how to control my frizzy curls. It took many years of trial and error, but I have finally come to the point where I love and embrace my curls. Here are some tips on how you can too:

1. Shower in the morning

If your hair is anything like mine, waking up in the morning with decently presentable hair is not really an option. The matted morning mess is a point of no return that has no solution other than a ponytail or a bun. Showering in the morning will ensure that you can wear your curly hair down all day.

2. Do not use a towel to dry your hair

The texture of a towel adds a lot of unwanted frizz to your hair. Wrapping your hair in an old cotton t-shirt is a much better alternative.

3. Use tons of hair products

In my opinion there is no such thing as using “too many” products. Lotions, gels and mousses help to tame your curls and take out the frizz. (The brand pictured above is one of my favorites). If you are looking for a cheaper drugstore alternative, the John Frieze Frizz Ease products work wonderfully too.

4. Don’t touch your hair while it is drying

Constantly putting your hair up and down from a ponytail and tucking it behind your ear will lead to a crimped disaster. Just leave your hair alone… I know this is hard, but it’s vital that you NEVER brush your hair when it is dry.

5. Shampoo your hair less frequently

I know it might seem gross, but in reality the natural oils your hair creates are what keep it from looking dry and frizzy. When you wash your hair make sure you are using sulfate free shampoo. Your hair will thank you.

6. Use hot tools only for special occasions

Yes they really can be that bad. Burning your hair into an unnatural texture will have split ends taking over your life. Put down that straightener and start embracing those gorgeous curls!
