The phenomenon of “the girl crush” has been circulating the globe for as long as anyone can remember. English women back in the 1500s probably wanted to be Queen Elizabeth just as badly as ninety-percent of the female population wants to be Jennifer Lawrence today. And no, it’s not just because both were rich and famous; there are plenty of women like that who aren’t nearly as admired (I’m talking to you, Miley Cyrus). It takes a certain kind of girl do be deemed “crushable”, and here’s a profile of some bonafide girl crushes walking around campus.
Name: Claire MB
Age: 20
Hometown: Lawrence, Kansas
Year: 2014
Major: Journalism and Urban Design/Architecture
Girl Crush Status: You always read about those girls who are quote-on-quote “quirky” and “entirely themselves”.  Claire here is the real deal. Appropriately she interns at HGTV and has her own spot on WNYU (that’s NYU’s online radio station, for those of you who haven’t checked it out yet), interviewing artists such as French pop singer Yelle. Claire’s craftiness ranges from elaborate nail designs to colorfully coloring pretty much every domestic accessory possible, salt-shakers included. She also wears bangs and asymmetric patterns like it ain’t no big. Now, what’s not to crush about?
HC NYU: Who are your personal girl crushes and why?
CMB: I’m so bad at thinking of things when I need to think of them, but lemme try here– definitely Yelle, because I love her music and she’s generally the coolest. Yolandi Visser too, because I really admire how few fucks she gives. Really, it’s anyone who can do their own thing and not worry about what other people think of them. Not being crazy for the sake of being crazy, just not being afraid to do what you want. There’s also a blog I read called Hello Sandwich and I don’t remember the writer’s name, but she seems like she has the coolest life doing arts n’ craftsy stuff and hanging out in Japan. Plus she has a million stickers and rolls of washi tape and stuff like that. She would be a career girl crush I guess!
HC NYU: What’s a personality quality you’re most proud of?
CMB: Being someone’s girl crush?! I’m so flattered, seriously. But really, maybe inventiveness? I feel like I’m good at solving problems and figuring out how stuff works and stuff like that.
HC NYU: Which qualities do you find constitute not just a girl crush, but an admirable person in general?
CMB: I want to say “being yourself” here, but that sounds really like, third grade. Plus there are some really awful people in the world, so I guess I’d rather they not be themselves? Anyway, girl crush qualities would be a) doing really cool stuff with your life, b) staying down-to-earth about it, and c) not walking really slow on crowded sidewalks or anything incredibly annoying like that.
HC NYU: Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
CMB: Hopefully getting paid to do arts and crafts. Or being Newt Gingrich’s hairdresser (since I’m already practicing.) If those don’t work out, I’d like to work for a news network, or go to grad school for some kind of design. I’m still working on the whole “career plans” thing.
HC NYU:Â Any other fun tidbits about yourself that you’d like to share?
CMB: I just started growing a Newt Gingrich chia pet. It’s really precious. Some company made them for election 2012, and they’re still selling on Amazon for like $5. Mine even has a little mullet where the chia seeds fell down the back of his head. Mullet Newt Gingrich! (Is this a fun tidbit or what!?)
