The phenomenon of “the girl crush” has been circulating the globe for as long as anyone can remember. English women back in the 1500s probably wanted to be Queen Elizabeth just as badly as ninety-percent of the female population wants to be Jennifer Lawrence today. And no, it’s not just because both were rich and famous; there are plenty of women like that who aren’t nearly as admired (take your pick). It takes a certain kind of girl do be deemed “crushable”, and here’s a profile of some bonafide girl crushes walking around campus.
Name: Eliana SherwoodYear: 2014Major: History/Sociology (with a minor in social and public policy)Hometown: Gainesville, Fl
Girl-Crush Status: Meet Eliana Sherwood, one of those cultured, savvy girls you can’t stop listening to a parties. Growing up in Florida and now studying in New York, Eliana’s British roots and the love of English cultural (as seen in the photo above with her appropriately drinking tea) give her a witty edge and clipped tone that would make Guy Ritchie proud. Read along to find out just what this week’s latest girl-crush has to say.
HC NYU: Who are your personal girl crushes and why?ES: My personal girl crushes at the moment would have to be Jennifer Lawrence and Zooey Deschanel because they are both so unique and quirky. I love that they both have such interesting personalities and that they aren’t afraid to be themselves and say what’s on their minds. They both just seem so real and relatable. I’m especially impressed with how Jennifer Lawrence has spoken so candidly about body image issues and problems with the way that the media deals with women, I really respect her for having such strong opinions and not being afraid to share them.
HC NYU: Are there any girl crushes you disagree with?ES: I can’t say that there are any girl crushes that I disagree with. I think that everyone has their own idea of what they like and who they look up to, so who am I to judge that?
HC NYU: What standards do you find society places upon women today (both positive and negative)ES: Society places a lot of negative standards on women, especially when it comes to appearance. Women are given an impossibly high standard of beauty to live up to, and the constant use of Photoshop in the media only encourages this unrealistic standard.
HC NYU: As a senior, tell us what you look forward to entering the work force and what advice those girls still in college may follow?ES: I am so scared and excited at the same time about graduating in a few months and (hopefully) getting a job, The whole thing is so overwhelming, it still doesn’t feel real that I’ll be done with college so soon. But I am really looking forward to what the future holds and finding something that I love to do for my job. My advice to girls still in college is to take every single experience as a learning experience, and to try to find a way to take in as much as possible and grow from each experience.
