How to Battle Dry Skin in the Wintertime

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

While the cold never bothered Elsa anyway, it has been ruining this California girl’s complexion. This winter has been brutal on my skin. I can best describe the circumstances of my flesh in three words: flakey, cracked, and thirsty. With spring right around the corner, I knew it was time for something I like to call complexion boot camp. Over the past couple of weeks, I have taken various steps to bring my skin back to who she was before this dark, cold winter; needless to say, she is now glowing. Here are my top tips to bring some life back into that beautiful face of yours as well.

1. Hydrate

Two words: Drink. Water. Drinking water is probably one of the most crucial steps in hydrating your skin, especially in the winter. Due to a lack of humidity in the winter, your skin lacks moisture; while you may not notice the change, your skin does. It is super important to adjust the amount of water you drink when it starts to get cold in order to prevent dry skin. While it may be difficult to make this a habit, there are many ways to incorporate drinking water into your routine effortlessly. For instance, carry around a water bottle. I own a Hydro Flask and constantly fill it up throughout the day, and I truly believe this is what has improved my skin’s appearance the most.

2. Moisturizer/Serum/Body Lotion

While it may seem cliché, applying lotion and moisturizer is a task that must be done. I often find myself bypassing it in my routine, but my skin is not afraid to remind me a couple of hours later. When moisturizing, NEVER forget the rest of your body. I am currently using the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream and while it smells great, it also feels great on my skin. I wrote an article explaining some of my favorite moisturizers and serums that you should totally check out if you are in need.

3. Facials

If you are ever going to spoil your skin, winter is the time to do it. Every couple of months I like to treat myself to a hydrating facial with my facialist back in California (@alanabeauty_oc). I am currently on Accutane which makes my skin drier than usual, so she customizes my facial so that I leave with a beautiful glow. Getting a facial is something that I think people should include more in their self-care regimens, as they can really do wonders for the skin.

4. Humidifier

One of my favorite parts of my facial is when the humidifier gets turned on and my face soaks up all the moisture. Luckily, this part can also be done at home with a humidifier. It is super simple and affordable, costing around $30 on Amazon, and so great for the skin. If you’re shooting for a more dewy look, a humidifier can help you achieve one during these cold and dry times.

Voila! There you have four easy ways to replenish your skin this season. Spring is just around the corner and if you follow these steps your skin will be back in shape in no time. I wish you the best of luck and may the skin gods be with you!
