Study Abroad Diaries: EXPO Milano 2015

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

Buongiorno, friends! Today’s Study Abroad Diaries is a short and sweet spiel about our food-filled trip to EXPO Milano 2015 two Friday’s ago. On September 18th, my Italian class and a few other classes boarded an 8am bus ride from Florence to Milan to participate in the universal expedition hosted by Milan from May 1 to October 31, 2015.

The theme for EXPO this year is, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” and discusses the ability of countries to produce sufficient food for everyone while respecting the planet and its resources. EXPO Milano features over 140 countries with pavilions showing off each countries’ creative technology, architecture, music and of course, cuisine. The event takes place over 1.1 million square meters, providing over 20 million visitors the opportunity to taste, experience and see the world’s best dishes while discussing solutions on food and sustainability.

Participating in EXPO Milano and witnessing so many countries discuss our planet and our food in one place was eye-opening for me. The idea behind “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” is that although everyone should have the right to healthy, quality food, we must also remember that the earth is not ours to take. We don’t normally think about where our food comes from, and how lucky we are to be able to access healthy food from the global marketplace. However, seeing that idea take form all around me—even if only for a few hours—was a humbling experience.
